Hello - Friday I met with Dr. Diane Thompson, Med Dir Integrated Health. She is working with Kris Baldwin and has received funding with Margaret's blessing (or encouragement, not sure which) for a project that works with nurses to see if exercise will reduce stress, burnout, sicktime, and increase morale. She plans to pay (fromIntegrative Medicinecost center)30 minutes three times a week for staff nurses from SFMC to go to the SFMC gym to exercise. They would sign in and out andrecord what exercises they completed. They are allowed to do more than 30 minutes, but will only be paid for 30. There will be no overtime pay. They can go before, during or after work.Shewill recruit 40 nurses and then put them in a lottery. The nameswill be drawn to the incentive pay for the exercise, and the ones not selected will be the "control".All participants have to currently be "moderate" exercisers that are not doing more than 30 min three times a week. They all will receive a small gift for going through the pre and post biometric screening, and taking tests to measure burnout and work satisfaction.

At first she thought they would go during their 12 hour shift, but I mentioned that I thought this unlikely unless it's at their lunch, and I'm not sure how many actually take a lunch break. She wants to work with the managers to allow them to leave the unitfor their 30minutes exercise during the shift. I wanted to run this past you first, and think she should talk to the managers before going farther with this study, or at least very soon while we're in the planning stages. Thoughts? When would be a good time for her to meet with the SFMC mgrs? Do they have a separate meeting like PH mgrs do?

She is also working on a second project withTobi Steinberg, an EAPpsychotherapist for nurses at PH. This project will not be paid and involves a 45 minute class one time per week to discuss how to handle stress and building resiliency. This class would not be during work time.

Sounds exciting. I agree next steps to present to the FM nurse managers (I will see if I can get this to Becky), then she can give us an idea of when and if she will start a FM nurse manager meeting

Sounds like a good study. Yes we will have a separate meeting. I do have a couple of more questions………What cost center to the hours spent with project go to? Wonder how other staff will respond to covering, not just a break or two or lunch but also to include this time?

The cost center (don’t know number) for Integrated Health. Your concerns are the same as mine…thus the request to meet with managers. I’d actually like to see this study done with the managers, too!

Hello Di – I let Rose Ann Moore, Interim CNO and Becky Kahl, Interim VP of Nursing at SFMC know about your study. They think it’s a great idea and would like you to meet with all the managers at SFMC to discuss your plans. What is a good day and time to do so in the near future? I’ll let Becky know, and she will set up the room over there. Thanks. R.
