· Taking a Risk
Consider each task carefully. Identify which task interests you most. Once you have made your decision, collect the necessary resources from your teacher to complete the task.
ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY 1
LAUNCHING A NEW PRODUCT – LOGOS AND STRAPLINES (SLOGANS)
Most highly successful and well known businesses are easily identifiable because they have an easy identifiable logo and/or strapline.
Task 1
Look at the logos below and identify the name of the business:
Some logos are more easily identified as they actually include the company name:
A strapline is a simple and memorable phrase to accompany a logo or brand that communicates a product’s appeal. If effective, it should become an important part of its image. In simple terms it is a slogan or a catch line.
Task 2
Below is a list of well-known straplines. In the space provided write in the name of the organisation or product that is being referred to:
Just do it ______
Because I’m worth it ______
Every little helps ______
Finger lickin’ good ______

TASK 3
The chocolate company CHOCOS have come up with a new chocolate snack bar. They think that it is so unique that they want to market it under a different name and image from the rest of their range.
This chocolate bar is low in fat (only 99 calories per bar), has a rich chocolate taste and provides a good source of energy and vitamins. The company wish to market the new chocolate bar specifically to young people aged 14-18 years old.
The company want this chocolate bar to be seen as a healthy alternative to other chocolate bars without compromising on taste and quality – this is what makes the new chocolate bar so unique.
Your task

Resources
Computer
Card
Coloured pens/pencils
Glue stick
Ruler
Scissors
Paper
Your advertisement should include a name for the new chocolate bar and show what the new bar will look like. You should also design an appropriate logo and strapline that will help identify the new product.
ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY 2
ENTREPRENEURS
An entrepreneur is someone who:
· comes up with a good idea for a business
· organises all the elements needed for the business to work
· takes a risk by putting money and time into the business
There is no qualification for being an entrepreneur. In many cases, successful entrepreneurs have no formal qualifications – but they do have drive, ambition and vision.
EXAMPLE
Scotland has had its fair share of entrepreneurs. The Carnegie Hall in New York is named after a famous Scottish Entrepreneur, Andrew Carnegie.
TASK 1
Use the Internet to research 3 important facts about the Carnegie Hall in New York. You should also download a picture of the Carnegie Hall. Present your facts and figures in a word document.
Insert your name in the footer and print out a copy of your work.
Coming a bit more up-to-date, some names that you might recognise are:
Sir Arnold Clark: car sales
Michelle Mone: underwear
Sir Tom Hunter: sports clothing and equipment
Sir Tom Farmer; car repairs
Sir Brian Soutar: coach travel
Duncan Bannatyne: gyms
TASK 2
Instructions:
· You should work in pairs to complete this task.
· Choose one of the Scottish Entrepreneurs above or another entrepreneur you have heard of.
· Use the Internet to research some basic information on this person – their name, company name, type of business, success of the business, location of the business etc.
· You should record as many interesting facts as you can.
· Prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the success of the entrepreneur and the business and present your findings to the class.
CONCLUSION
Often the contribution made by entrepreneurs to their country is recognised by awards and titles. This is because entrepreneurs create wealth and jobs at home and abroad.
It is true to say that countries like Scotland have gained from the efforts of entrepreneurs and their talents. The next step is to encourage and support the entrepreneurs of the future … you!
ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY 3
“TAKING A RISK”
We can think of a ‘risk’ in different ways. For example a footballer may go in for a ‘risky tackle’ – the footballer may stop an opponent from scoring a goal but, on the other hand, the tackle could result in an injury.
Gambling is considered to be risky. A gambler may place a £10 bet on a horse winning a race. If the horse wins, the return to the gambler may be high – but at the same time the £10 will be lost forever if the horse loses the race.
Every enterprise will carry a certain amount of risk – but an enterprising businessperson (entrepreneur) will reduce the risk as much as possible.
CASE STUDY
Read the case study below and then complete the activities that follow.
Caroline and Chris Lockhart have been in business for one year. The married couple first considered the idea of going into business two years ago. Their idea was to open a private nursery for children from three months old to five years. They believed that Caroline, a trained nursery nurse, and Chris, with his background in business, had the right skills to make a success of the business enterprise.
Mindful of the high rate of small business failure, the couple decided that they would take every possible step to minimise the risk. Apart from assessing the competition in the area, Caroline and Chris also did a lot of research to measure demand for nursery places and what parents would be prepared to pay. They also considered what parents would want for their money and what they could do to make their service the most attractive in the area.
Only when they were confident that they had a good chance of success in their business did Caroline and Chris take their first steps towards opening the nursery.
Activity 1
Each of the following factors could have an effect on the success of the nursery. Say whether you think the factor would have a good effect or a bad effect and why.
FACTOR / GOOD EFFECT? WHY? / BAD EFFECT? WHY?Another business opens offering a similar service.
The Government offers more nursery places in state run nurseries.
A large company opens nearby employing over 300 people.
There is a trend towards fewer working parents.
The Government helps parents meet the cost of a private nursery place.
Activity 2
Caroline and Chris included the following questions in their research. Suggest why they asked each of the questions.
QUESTION / WHY THE ANSWER MAY BE HELPFULHow old are your children?
Does your employer supply childcare facilities?
Please tell us the hours of your working day.
Activity 3
The name of an organisation is very important. Suggest 3 appropriate names that Caroline and Chris could use for their nursery. List your names in order of preference.

Activity 4
Use the Internet to research various nurseries/childcare centres in Glasgow. You should make a list of the services and activities they offer for children in their care. Record the information you find in the table below.

Activity 3

Your poster should include the name of the nursery, opening times (8.00 am – 6.00 pm) Monday to Friday, price £30 per day per child. You should also outline some of the activities and services that the nursery will offer.
Use appropriate formatting to enhance the presentation of your poster.
