Background to the role:

The Technical Department maintains a list of individuals who may be offered work as stage crew on a casual basis. Applications are invited from those with prior stage theatrical experience for inclusion on that list. There is a competitive recruitment selection process for inclusion onto the list. This process may be run a few times a year, depending on operational requirements. Those whose names are added to the list will be required to attend an induction and health and safety training session.

Inclusion on the list of stage casuals is no guarantee that work will be offered, individuals are at liberty to decline any offers of work which are made. Those who are included on the list of stage casuals will be subject to ongoing assessment on the basis of: their availability for work, reliability, work ethic/commitment, skills development, attention to detail, attitude to safety and fit into the team.

Job role:

Technical casuals are required to work effectively as part of a team, participating in all necessary technical work for a production from stores/workshops to rehearsal room, to stage rehearsal and performance, and return to stores, ensuring that all assigned activities associated are carried out to the highest possible standard of safety, efficiency and quality.

Person specification:

Ideally, we are looking for individuals with a proven track record in technical work for major repertory establishments, with strong communication and team work skills and a positive attitude to health and safety. Experience of the staging of opera and ballet performances is a distinct advantage.

Additionally:

  • For lighting bias casual work we would ideally expect prior lighting experience/qualification: lighting systems, follow spotting and/or board operation experience would be an advantage.
  • For stage bias casual work we would ideally expect prior stage experience: stage props, rigging, MEWP and/or automation systems experience would be an advantage.
  • For utility team casual work we would ideally expect prior get-in/out, MEWP and rigging experience.
  • For Sound Department casual work we would expect prior sound experience/qualifications, ideally with some broadcast engineering skills.
  • For casual work with the Linbury and Events team we would expect good all round technical stage experience in a similar small venue theatrical environment.
