English Summer Revision

Throughout the course of this year, we have studied several texts. Over the summer, we need to focus on retaining as much knowledge about these texts as we can. This will help us in year 11 and it will mean less revision will be needed throughout the course of next year. Due to this, you will need to complete the tasks within this booklet and hand them in during the first week back in September.

Blood Brothers:

  • Read through the play once more. Ensure you understand the basic plot and the names of the key characters and themes.
  • Produce a fact sheet that shows the key events that influenced Russell (context)- you should link these facts to quotes from the play. This can be done as a mind map or as a fact sheet in bullet points.
  • Create a scene by scene summary (NO copy & paste) in your own words, outlining the key characters/events within that part of the play. Sum up each scene using ONE key quotation.
  • Create a character profile for Mickey and Edward. Add quotes to show the key lines from that character. Think about how the characters are presented.

For example:

MickeyEdward

  • Write a practise answer to one of the following questions (minimum 4 PEEL paragraphs):

How does the writer present the theme of Superstition within the play?

How does the writer present the theme of Nature vs. nurture within the play?

How does the writer present the theme of Class within the play?

Conflict & Power poetry:

  • Read back through the poems and ensure you know the key events/themes of each one.
  • Create a mini storyboard for the poems (minimum 2) that you find hardest to remember. Draw images that represent the key moments. For example:

Bayonet Charge

  • Make a list of poems that you can compare & how you can compare them. It may be through theme/character or language. You could do this as a comparison gird or a chart or a min map-whichever way works best for you.
  • Create your own comparison question and answer it! You may use of the two examples below if you are stuck:

Compare how the poets present the theme of nature in ‘Storm on the Island’ and a poem of your choice.

Compare how poets present the theme of patriotism in ‘ Bayonet Charge’ and a poem of your choice.

Romeo and Juliet

  • Read through the play once more. Ensure you understand the basic plot and the names of the key characters and themes.
  • Recap dramatic techniques used by Shakespeare- not just language. Think about the use of the asides, dramatic irony, foreshadowing. Make a glossary of dramatic terminology that you could mention in your exam answer.
  • Pick a character and find quotes to show:

What their character does

What their character says

What others say about their character

What their character wants

  • Summarise the key scenes within the play (in your own words) You may want to use images as well as words or quotes to help you to remember what happens when and where. It is important that you know the order of the play and the key events.

A Christmas Carol:

  • Read back through the novel once more. Ensure you understand the basic plot and the names of the key characters and themes.
  • Research individual terminology of single words- things like adjectives, adverbs, imperatives. Think about how you could apply these to quotations from the novel. Exploring single word choice will get you higher marks. The more technical accuracy you have, the better!
  • Pick a character and create a profile outlining key information about the character. You need to include quotes to support. You can use images and/or words to illustrate information about the character. When you have done this, you should also link the character to the context. What is Dickens showing us about the 19th century through his writing about that character?

yours needs to be more detailed than this

  • Answer the following question: Explore the way that Scrooge’s character changes and the reason for his transformation. (20 marks)

You must include quotations to support and identify techniques used by the writer.

If you have any questions/concerns or issues with this summer project, you MUST speak to me BEFORE the summer holidays. I will not accept any excuses about not understanding tasks or not having copies of the text in September. You need to discuss these things and borrow copies of the text or use the class folder BEFORE we break up.
