Inparts of theArctictherearetownsandvillages – Greenland, forexample, thelargestisland in theworld, has a population of 55,000 people. Many of thesepeoplework in fishing. Theyhave a difficult life. Therearen’tmanyroadsbetweentownsandvillages, sopeopletravelbysnowmobileorwithdogs. FromNovembertoJanuaryit’sdarkfor 24 hours a day, but from May toJulythereare 24 hours of daylight. IntheAntarcticthereare no normal townsandvillages. Onlyscientistslivethereallyearround, in specialbuildingscalled ‘stations’. Theystudytheseaanimalsandlearnaboutthehistory of theworld’sclimatebystudyingtheweatherandtheice. It’s a hard placetolive, especially in winter, but many of themlove it thereandreturnagainandagain.
