Scientific Assemblies Coordinators - Activities of the Committee:
- Participated in conference calls regarding requests for proposals of annual meeting, spark session and midday session new format and development, general communications with vice-coordinator and mid-year call with scientific assemblies’ chairs and co-chairs.
- Created “How to” documents for chairs and co-chairs to pull reports within the member community
- Reviewed BioRad nominations and communicated regularly with awards committee chairwoman.
- Created a Scientific Assemblies Leadership Community within the member community creating better form of communication and information sharing site for leaders of the scientific assemblies. Documents uploaded for easy access included “How to” documents, handbook, report templates, BioRad nominations form, board reports and meeting minutes.
- Updated handbook with change in organizational chart and new submission calendar for ASCLS today.

Activities of the Committee or Affiliated Organizations
CEPI duties include:
1) Monitor and assess the trends in levels of practice and education ofpractitioners at all levels.
2) Develop and deliver annual mentoring and professional development activitiesin conjunction with the Clinical Laboratory Educators’ Conference.
3) Assess current trends in educational programs and their effects on careerchoices in clinical laboratory science. This is to include the updating,
development, and implementation of appropriate career recruitment materials
and strategies for use with precollege and undergraduate students, as well asgraduate students.

Committee Activities:
Entry Level Curriculum (ELC) - The updated Entry Level Curriculum was made available in January 2017. There were roundtable discussions at CLEC to help educators understand its uses.
- Discussionwith BOC - ASCLS members (Joan, Kyle, Suzanne Campbell) & staff (Jim & Karrie) and ASCLS representative to BOC (Kathy Hansen) participated in a call with Pat Tanabe of the BOC to discuss potential coordination of future BOC Practice Analysis with the ASCLS ELC. Pat thought the BOC committee’s duties would prohibit them from being involved in the ELC review process. However, the BOC plans to publish the practice analysis which could be a resource to the ASCLS ELC committee when they review & update.
CLEC proposal - CLEC 2017 CEPI session proposal was accepted. A panel of MLS and MLT educators presented stories of success to retain and recruit clinical sites as well as how to determine a return on investment (ROI) that may entice additional sites. A proposal for a session at CLEC 2018 was submitted entitled “Tips for Successful Grant Applications for Research in Education.”
E&R grant - Thanks to the E&R committee for approving education topics as acceptable to receive grant funding. List of topics are located at
CEPI representative to Legislative Symposium in March – Cindy Handley volunteered to attend the Legislative Symposium. She submitted several reports to the ESA Member Community to update on PAMA and other legislative issues.
Simulated lab survey – Karen Krisher, a faculty member at Wayne State University in Detroit developed a survey that was sent to NAACLS programs (from ASCLS) and the Simulated Lab listserv. She reported at CLEC about survey results and will submit a manuscript to Clinical Laboratory Science. She will continue to keep CEPI updated on this increasingly popular topic among MLT & MLS education programs.
Development of the ASCLS Medical Laboratory Educator Professional Development Institute (MLEd-PDI) – the ASCLS BODapproved development of this new endeavor at the March Board Meeting.
Goals:
- Provide new educators information to assist with curriculum and course development and implementation.
- Offer quality online modules on education topics.
- Be a resource for new and seasoned educators alike.
Plans: The CEPI has identified several needed topics and potential authors to launch the program with 4-5 online courses which will provide a foundation of educational principles needed for good instruction. PACE credit will be provided for successful completion.
The CEPI, with the assistance of the Product Development Committee (PDC), will take the lead with course development. A fee will be charged for each course..
We believe that once these modules are established, additional courses will be identified and offered to continue to provide timely, affordable, and useful continuing education to clinical lab educators. The Institute will continue to evolve and grow as needed to meet the needs of educators. It will supplement the successful Clinical Lab Educators’ Conference (CLEC).
Staff will provide guidance on marketing and course registration fees as well as author honorarium fees.

Activities of the Committee or Affiliated Organizations
- Welcomed each new Microbiology SA member.
- Sent a response to those individuals new to the roster welcoming them to our SA with an explanation of my role as Chair.
- Gave the new member a basic explanation regarding the Member Community as a whole and about the resources, discussion, and announcement areas.
- Consulted with the last two winners of the BioRad Professional achievement award and the Vice-Chairman and we selected a 2017 recipient
- Attempted to find three topics and speakers for the SPARK sessions. I have reached out to the Member Community with little response. There will be at least one topic presented:” new age of bacteria resistant to all antimicrobials.”
Activities of other Scientific Assemblies’ 2016-2017
Education Assembly – Darius Wilson
- Face to face meeting in Philadelphia, PA at the ASCLS meeting. Dr. Floyd Josephat elected Vice Chair.
- Multiple phone conferences throughout year establishing responsibilities and member community usage.
- Secured ASCLS member volunteers to review 15 poster abstracts for the CLEC conference. Ten posters and 1 tech demo agreed to participate at CLEC.
- Provided an article for ASCLS Today.
- Face to face meeting at CLEC 2017 in Boston. Provided power-point presentation to give committee updates.
- Attended CLEC wrap up session with ASCLS staff, CLEC chairs, and Dr. Josephat, ESA co-chair.
- Collaborated with Karrie Hovis in May to obtain 2 volunteers to review and update the directory for online programs and participated in the phone conference: Volunteers: Anastasia Augustine MLT(ASCP)CM,SP-POC and AbouDrammeh
- Assisted Dr. Josephat, ESA Co-Chair to secure ASCLS member volunteers to review student case studies, research papers, and poster abstracts for the ASCLS meeting. Nine posters will be judged at the ASCLS meeting. (April 2017)
- Vacant CEPI positions to be voted on at the ASCLS annual meeting.
- Participated in the ASCLS Scientific Assembly Meeting on July 31, 2016 in Philadelphia, PA
- Assumed the role of Chair of Scientific Assembly for Chemistry and Urinalysis after the ASCLS annual meeting in August 2016
- Worked with the members of Scientific Assembly to send proposal for Chemistry/Urinalysis for the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. Six proposals were sent to the ASCLS office.
- Participated with the ASAMC in the selection of proposals submitted for 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA
- Participated in the Conference call with the ASCLS office to formulate new SPARK sessions at the 2017 ASCLS Annual Meeting.
- Identified one nominee for Bio-Rad Award for Chemistry who will be contacted in October.
- Participated in the ASCLS Scientific Assembly Conference call on January 10, 2017
- Posted announcement and discussion in Member Community regarding SPARK session topics for the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego
- Had a conference call with the Chemistry/Urinalysis SA Vice-Chair regarding the SA plans for 2017
- Nominated one SA Chemistry member for SA Bio-Rad Professional Achievement Award to be held in the Award Ceremony at the 2017 ASCLS Annual meeting in San Diego
- Worked/advocated, as President of ASCLS-Illinois, to increase membership in ASCLS
- Post calls to the Scientific Assembly community for the submission of articles to ASCLS Today and ASCLS Clinical Lab Investigation
