Come to school by 7:20/7:30 AMon exam days. There will be a free breakfast in the Junior High Cafeteria.

READING COMPREHENSION:

Approx. 90 minutes in length

TYPES OF QUESTIONS:

Vocabulary: These questions will ask you to define a word taken out of context. Read the sentence before and after it. Try to “fit” the definition into the sentence.

Inferences and drawing conclusions: These answers are not found in the text. They will ask you to take information from the text and determine what is being implied.

Cause and Effect: These questions ask you how one event or action leads to another.

Sequencing: These questions ask you to put things in the order that they happened.

Look for key words; before, after, during, first.

Main Idea: These questions ask you to tell what a story is about. There is evidence of the main idea throughout the entire passage.

Theme: The theme in the story is the lesson that the author wants you to learn after reading the story.

TIPS AND STRATEGIES FOR THIS TASK:

Read the directions

Read the questions before you read the passage so that you will know what to look for

Underline key information, words, and phrases while reading

Remember TRASH, TRASH, TREASURE, GOLD

Read over your answers, make sure all are marked on the scan-tron
