English Advising InternshipInformation 2017-2018

(ENGL 495, 3 credits)

The English Advising office seeks two English and/or Film Studies majors for fall 2017 and spring 2018 internships. Students interested in educational administration and advising are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to work with the English Undergraduate advisor and English Department Office staff.

The English Advising intern will serve as a student leader in the department’s freshmen mentoring program and will learn about the profession of academic advising in its global context, college student service, department resources, administration of academic policies and procedures, and curriculum.

Interns will network with other student leaders, assist with advising and student service projects, contribute to English department recruitment efforts, and create or update handouts and web resources.

Note: 3 credit hours, 9 hours per week required in the English Advising Office.

Fall Duties include:

  • Arrange weekly email newsletter.
  • Update Preparing for Graduate School and Resume handouts.
  • Revision project on the English concentration advising guides
  • Serve as a student leader in the English Student Advisory Board.
  • Serve as student-leader department’s freshman mentoring program.
  • Development of social media platform for freshman mentoring program using Facebook to advertise mentoring and department events, and special interest & news articles on English studies and careers in the humanities.
  • Conduct informational interviews and compose faculty profiles for English Advising newsletter.
  • Update thesis and UCARE information, and annotate & bind new theses projects.
  • Update bulletin board as needed.
  • Send Welcome message to new on-campus transfers and, when requested, meet with new majors to explain advising office services.
  • Attend UNL Academic Advising Association Conference in spring 2018.
  • Compose book review for an advising journal.
  • Write final course reflection 2-3 pages, incorporated into portfolio of work completed during internship.

Spring Duties include:

  • Arrange weekly email newsletter.
  • Update Preparing for Graduate School (part 1), English Concentration & Gaining Experience handouts.
  • Create English Research Guide including booklet for honors theses.
  • Serve as a student leader in the English Student Advisory Board.
  • Send Welcome message to new on-campus transfers and, when requested, meet with new majors to explain advising office services.
  • Assist with logistics for English & FS Major for a Day program.
  • Lead department’s freshman mentoring program.
  • Development of social media platform for freshman mentoring program using Facebook to advertise mentoring and department events, and special interest & news articles on English studies and careers in the humanities.
  • Assist with career and undergraduate placement information/report (solicit responses, collect data, and present in excel format).
  • Conduct informational interviews and compose faculty profiles for English Advising newsletter.
  • Update bulletin board as needed.
  • Attend UNL Academic Advising Association Conference in spring 2018.
  • Compose book review for an advising journal.
  • Write final course reflection 2-3 pages, incorporated into portfolio of work completed during internship.
