Classroom Rules,Course Outline/Materials, and Student Expectations

Welcome to English 2 Honors! We will focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading (fiction, nonfiction, and poetry), and writing. Students will take the English 2 EOConlineat the end of this course.

CLASSROOM RULES AND CONSEQUENCES

  • Be on time! Be in your assigned seat and prepared to work when the bell rings.
  • You will be marked tardy if you are not in your assigned seat when the bell rings. 3 or more tardies in a quarter will result in confiscation of your phone for the period and/or lunch detention.
  • Be prepared for class with the necessary supplies.
  • Failure to come to class prepared could result in a zero or a late grade for the assignment.
  • Listen carefully to instructions the first time and stay on task.
  • Be respectful of your teacher, your classmates, and your school at all times.
  • Disrespect will NOT be tolerated and will result in parental contact followed by a referral to administration.
  • No food or drink (except bottled water) in the classroom.
  • Cell phones/smart watches must be out of sight and silent, unless otherwise instructed. Earbuds should never be in your ears, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Cell phones/smart watches/earbuds that are seen or heard will be confiscated by the teacher and spend the remainder of the block in “jail.” This is your warning!
  • Do not get out of your seat without permission.

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS

  • Students will need black/blue pens, pencils, highlighters (two colors), loose-leaf college-ruled notebook paper, 3-ring binder (1.5 inches) with 5 dividers, post-it notes, index cards (any size), an agenda, and 1 box of tissues for the classroom.
  • Students are expected to keep all work in an organized binder(specifically for English), which will be checked periodically. The 5 dividers should be labeled in this order:
  • Grammar/Voice
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • EOC Practice
  • Please purchase hard copies of1984 by George Orwell (3rdQuarter) and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (4th Quarter) for this course. It is highly encouraged that you purchase your own novels so you can annotate in them. You can purchase these at Barnes & Noble at Carolina Place.

3rd Quarter

  • Grammar: Writing Complete Sentences; Writing Effectives Sentences; Parallel Structure
  • Vocabulary: Classical Roots Lessons 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6
  • Reading: Close Reading Strategies; Nonfiction, Fiction, and Poetry; 1984
  • Writing: Short Constructed Responses; Narrative Essay—Diction, Figurative Language, Revising, Editing

4th Quarter

  • Grammar: Comma Usage; Spelling
  • Vocabulary: Classical Roots Lessons 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12
  • Reading: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry; Things Fall Apart
  • Writing: Short Constructed Responses; Argumentative Essay—Claim, Counterargument, Revising, Editing

EXPECTATIONS

  • Attendance: Make every effort to be on time and in class on a consistent basis. Remember, if you miss more than 10 days, you have to make up the timewith me at my convenience or receive an F for the course.
  • Bathroom Passes: Students will be allowed only 2 passes per quarter for emergencies only and not during direct instruction. Use the restroom before school, in between classes, and during lunch. No students are allowed to go the first and last 15 minutes of class.
  • Make-Up Work: Arrangements for make-up work due to an absence must be made by the studentwithin five school daysof your return to class. Do NOT ask me for yourmake-up work at thebeginning of class!
  • Remediation/Retesting: Students who score below 79% on formal assessments have the option to do test corrections or retest after remediation. This should be initiated by the student within one week of the grade being entered in PowerSchool.
  • CMS Late Work Policy: 1 day late=80%, 2 days late=70%, 3 days late=50% at best.
  • Any discussion/concern about student grades should be done privately with the teacher and not during class.
  • Homework: Write down your daily homework assignments. They are always posted on the homework board and on my website. Use an agenda so you won’t forget!
  • Please adhere to the CMS Honor Code: “I will not cheat or help others cheat. I will take pride in my school and how I represent it, and be responsible for my actions. I understand that violating this honor code compromises my self-respect. I will follow this honor code and help others to do the same.”
  • Absolutely no profanity. Show respect and intelligence by speaking appropriately.
  • Raise yourhand and wait to be called on before speaking, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Absolutely no personal grooming or sleeping(includes putting your head down on the desk) in class.
  • Remain seated until the bell rings at the end of the block, pick up books on the floor, and throw away all trash at this time. Please keep the classroom neat and clean!
