Prerequisites: Students must earn a “C” or better in ENGL 1301 or its equivalent.
Writing Basic Skills Prerequisite: ENGL 0301
Reading Basic Skills Prerequisite: READ 0303
Principles and techniques of written, expository, and persuasive composition; analysis of literary, expository, and/or persuasive texts; emphasis on critical thinking.

Course Objectives

I. The student will be able to write with:

*A strong sense of purpose and audience

*Fluency, specificity, and the authenticity of their own voices

*Control of diction: words chosen for precision, appropriateness, and

interest

*Control of syntax: the structure of individual sentences, variety and interest

II. The student will practice the following behaviors to reach the goals:

*Read and write complete essays in response to published writing

*Develop a sense of writing as a process to include prewriting, drafting, revising and editing.

*Produce extended discourse for 2 typed pages or more.

III.Course Policies/Expectations

*An open mind is required at all times. Never give up if you receive a lower

than expected grade. Learn from it!

*Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Excessive absences will hinder performance

in class and jeopardize credit.

*If you will not be able to attend class, you need to make arrangements so that your

work is turned in on time. Absence is not an excuse for late work, and late work is

not accepted.

*Academic dishonesty is not allowed. This includes plagiarism, failure to cite

sources, use of other’s work and recycling previous papers for this course.

*All technology use should be for class participation. Any off-task use of technology will affect

participation grade.

*All grades will count toward the college and high school grade. The grade in the course is reported as

is to Palo Alto. The grade in the course is reported as is to Floresville High School but then weighted

prior to being entered in the student’s GPA.

Course Requirements and Grades

* Formal Papers = 55%

*Daily Grades = 20%

*Participation = 15%

*Mid-Term/Final = 10%

Final Course Grade (as defined by Palo Alto)

The course grade will be determined by the accumulation of the percentages above.

A (90-100) = excellent/performance beyond mastery

B (80-89) = above average/beyond basic mastery

C (70-79) = average mastery

D (60-69) = below average

F (0-59) = failure

Specific Assignments

  1. Formal Papers = 55%: You will write four formal papers. All papers must be written in MLA format and include in-text citations as well as a works cited page when sources are used. All formal papers are due by 4:30 p.m. on designated date to turnitin.com even if the student is not present in class.
  2. Daily Grades = 20%:Daily grades consist of assignments completed throughout the course in and out of class, including, but not limited to, 10 reader responses that are submitted to turnitin.com by midnight on due dates. In addition, each student will prepare one poem for presentation in class. The presentation will be approximately 5 minutes and the student will lead the class in a discussion of the poem’s background, elements and interpretations.
  3. Participation = 15%: This class in learner centered. Speaking up in class and sharing ideas in a productive manner is a must. Bringing your book to class, taking notes, pop quizzes and completing any tickets in the door or out the door apply toward the participation grade.
  4. Mid-Term = 10%: The mid-term will be a multiple choice exam over the readings.
  5. Final = 10%: The final exam will be a multiple choice exam over the readings.
