10/3/14 PTA Board Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Rachel Cahalan, Jodi Constantino, Mary Ung, Heather Drumm, Madison Meljac, Anita Bahatnagar, Beky McCarthy, Teacher Vanada Kapour, who sat it for Ms. Salata

Our meeting began with Rachel Cahalan reporting on the Book Fair, which begins with the Movie Night kick-off on Friday, October 17th. We brainstormed movie ideas, but we will put it on the PTA Facebook page and have a vote. The movie with the highest votes wins! Also at Movie Night we will be selling Spirit Wear from 5-6pm. There needs to be 2 volunteers to help with that.

During the Book Fair we will need volunteers during the school day to help with wish lists, work as cashiers, straighten shelves, etc. and volunteers from 3-4pm.

November 14th, 6-8pm, will be our next General Membership Meeting. From 6-6:30 the gym will be open to drop off your kids for games while the meeting happens in the cafeteria. At 6:30pm Bingo Night will start! Charlotte Emery will be hosting Bingo. Rachel Cahalan will be in charge of signing in the kids for the gym game time. (6-6:30)

Jodi Constantino talked about the Soaring Raven Award. We will need a teacher representative by 11/7 for the committee board. More information will be going out in the Wednesday Folder.

Mary Ung is working on securing advertisements for the Directory. There are some people who have asked how they can help from home. Editing the Directory could be one of those ways. She also started receiving artwork for the cover. The PTA Board will vote for the winner.

Heather Drumm reported about the finances. An audit committee looked at last year’s reports and approved them. We need to go through the accounts monthly and reconcile them. Jodi Constantino agreed to do that with Heather. The monthly budget report was handed out.

Beky McCarthy gave us a Programs overview:

The first Program is an outreach to the community. It is a Soda Pop tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House. Mr. Austin will expand it to the community. SCA will also help. More details will follow.

The author for Authors and Writers 2014/2015 will be a Maryland author. Ms. Ferret the librarian will be involved with this.

There is thought to have a monthly Reading Challenge posted in the library.

The Chess Club is for grades 2-6. Peter Snow from Snow’s Chess Academy will run this event. This will take place on Wednesdays after school starting on December 15th.

The Science Club will be hosted by Mad Science. The first session will be for the 3rd-6th Graders and the second session will be for the K-2nd Graders. They will be 8 week sessions starting in late November.

STEM Science in the Classrooms will also take place this year. The teachers will be communicating with the class leads to see what would be the best to teach.

Other “Pop-ups” through the year are the Spelling Bee and Geography Bee.

Ms. Kapoor stressed the importance of Family Reading Nights, especially in the 1st Grade.

The next Board meeting will be on November 7th.

Respectfully Submitted,

Ursula Schuttinga
