English 10 Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to cover the Alabama College and Career-Readiness Standards (CCRS) for tenth grade English Language Arts and to meet the following objectives:

  1. To read and comprehend literature , including stories, dramas, poems, informational texts using a variety of strategies to cite textual evidence, draw inferences, determine theme and sequence of events, identify main idea and supporting ideas, analyze characters, identify plot structure, and categorize different points of view
  2. To determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text and analyze the impact of specific word choice.
  3. To write expository and argumentative essays using support from the text
  4. To analyze United States documents of historical and literary significance, such as the Declaration of Independence, The Preamble to the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and Lincoln’s Inaugural Address for their themes, purposes, and rhetorical features
  5. To establish and maintain a formal style of writing
  6. To write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured sequence of events.
  7. To use technology, including the internet, to produce writing products
  8. To conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question or solve a problem
  9. To initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions
  10. To present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically
  11. To demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing orspeaking
  12. To demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing

TEXTBOOK: Prentice Hall Literature Course 1

*The students will also read one novel each nine weeks as follows:

1st Nine Weeks: The Lord of the Flies byWilliam Golding

2nd Nine Weeks: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

3rd Nine Weeks: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

4th Nine Weeks: The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

MATERIALS NEEDED ON A DAILY BASIS:

#2 pencils 3-ring binder with 5 divider tabs (preferably 2-inch)

Blue or black ink pens jump drive

Highlighter-any color composition book college ruled (marbled design)

Loose-leaf notebook paper

GRADING POLICY: tests, major projects, essays, research papers- 60%

Classwork, homework, bellringers, quizzes- 30%

*No extra credit will be given

PLAGIARISM:

Plagiarism includes but is not limited to the following:

  1. Directly quoting all or part of another person’s written or spoken words without quotation marks
  2. Paraphrasing all or another part of another person’s written or spoken words without notes or documentation within the body of the work
  3. Stating an idea, theory, or formula originated by another person without documenting the source of that information
  4. Repeating information, such as statistics, which is not common knowledge and which was originally compiled by another person
  5. Purchasing or receiving in any other manner, information which is the work of another person and submitting that work as the student’s own work

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Think before you act. (Raise your hand to speak, do not talk when I am talking or when another classmate is talking, wait for me to dismiss you)
  2. Respect others. (Respect other’s privacy and be considerate of personal space)
  3. Inspire success. (Be supportive of your classmates, and be kind and patient)
  4. Be responsible. (Come to class prepared, complete assignments, remember deadlines, and take care of technology equipment)
  5. Express good attitudes. (Smile and actively listen and participate)

CONSEQUENCES:

1st offense: verbal warning

2nd offense: teacher/student conference

3rd offense: parent contact

4th offense: referral to administrator

*ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM POLICIES:

1. Absolutely no gum, candy, or drinks

2. Cell phone use in class is absolutely prohibited unless I ask you to use them for a

specific learning purpose. If you are caught using your cell, you will be asked to put it

away immediately. Non-compliance will result in a write up to administration for

class disruption and defiance. (No exceptions)

COMPLETING ASSIGNMENTS:

  1. Always head your paper as follows: First and last name

MAKE UP WORK:

If you are absent from school, you must arrange with me for makeup work on the day of your return. I will give you a makeup work contract with the date your assignments are due. If you fail to turn in these assignments by the due date, you will receive a zero.

TARDY POLICY:

If you are tardy to class, I will mark it on my daily attendance/tardy sheet. Consequences for repeated unexcused tardies are as follows:

4th unexcused tardy: parent contact

5th unexcused tardy: form sent to office, resulting in 1 day if ISS

NOTEBOOKS:

Notebook sections should be in the following order:

  1. Bellringers (dated) 4. Writing rough drafts
  2. Notes/Handouts (in the order given & dated) 5. Loose-leaf paper/Miscellaneous
  3. Vocabulary

LEAVING CLASS:

Each student will be given 2 restroom passes at the beginning of each nine weeks. These are to be used in case of emergencies. I would advise you to save these for emergencies only. You will not be allowed to leave class if you do not have one of these passes. Instructional time is very important!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I feel that communication with parents is vital in ensuring that your child receive the best education possible. I will be using the REMIND app to notify parents of upcoming assignments, quizzes, tests, important announcements, etc. related to my class. Please sign up for this as soon as possible so you will be able to receive these messages via text. (An information sheet with the code is attached)
