Rotating group member assignments:(for groups of 5 one person must double up each week)

  1. Discussion director/facilitator: You are the leader for the day of the entire group; therefore, you will have a few more tasks to manage. You are responsible for keeping everything on task and moving forward. After the vocabulary master speaks, you will start the conversation off with a quick summary of all three chapters answering any plot confusion people may have. When this is completed you will lead discussion by asking some thought provoking questions. These are questions where people will infer, assume and maybe even disagree. Plot based questions (eg. Where are they?) are not thought provoking. You are to record people’s answers as they discuss.

What you pass in to me in your folder:

Plot summaries for each chapter.

5 thought provoking questions and the answers of your group

You are required to pass in a typed, one page reflection on your experience as leader the next day (Friday). I don’t want to know what you did (I already know that), but I want to know how you did. What were your strengths? Your weaknesses? What did you learn about yourself and group dynamics? (20 questions and answers/5 reflection)

  1. Literary luminary/alternate facilitator: You are responsible for choosing passages from the novel that are especially poignant, interesting ,powerful or puzzling. You will read them out loud to the circle and explain your justification for choosing them. If you found one puzzling, ask for your groups feedback and record it. If the discussion leader is absent, you will serve that role too, so have 5 thought provoking questions ready to go.

What you pass in to me in your folder:

3 quotes per chapters (9 in total) along with your justification. Please separate into chapters.(30 points)

3.Character Captain: You are responsible for explaining characterization of the main characters. You will delve deep into the psychology of the character and back up your findings with examples from the text such as dialogue, what the narrator says about the character, what others say, what character looks like and how he behaves in certain situations.

What you pass to me in your folder:

You will hand in a typed description of ONE main character (choose from the three) for each chapter along with TWO other characters (other major or minor) per chapter. This will total 3 characters per chapter. Please differentiate between chapters. If you use specific quotes, please include page numbers. (30 points)

4.Artful Adventurer: You are responsible for an artistic representation of the material read. You may do this through a combination of the following avenues: artwork in any artistic medium, music, poetry, collage, mobile etc. You will present your work to your group along with your justification.(15 points)

What you pass in to me in your folder:

A typed half page explanation as to why you did what you did. (15 points)
