Re: Letter of Recommendation for Mr. Chabot Gladiator

Dear Selection Committee:

As the Chabot College Engineering Instructor, I have known Mr. Wesley Gladiator since August of 2005 when he enrolled in my Computational Methods for Engineers and Scientists course. Mr. Gladiator took a total of five of my classes[1], most recently completing the Engineering Design Graphics course in the Fall 2006term. I am very pleased to recommend him for a SVEC Engineering Education Award.

Mr. Gladiator is a serious and very capable engineering student. Mr. Gladiator turned in excellent performances in all the courses for which I served as his instructor. I observed that Mr. Gladiator has a combination of strong hands-on skills as demonstrated by the Materials and Circuits lab exercises, along with an excellent analytical aptitude which he displayed in all the engineering courses. Table I below summarizes Mr. Gladiator’s excellent academic performance in both absolute and relative terms for thefive courses. In particular I would bring to your attention hisfine work in the difficult, MATLAB-based, Computational Methods course.

Table I • Performance byChabotGladiatorin ChabotCollegeEngineering Courses

Course / Term / Grade / Score / Class Rank
Computational Methods / Fall05 / A / 90.64% / 1 out of 17
Engineering Materials / Spring06 / A / 91.44% / 2 out of 18
Engineering Graphics / Fall06 / A / 93.86% / 5 out of 19
Engineering Mechanics / Fall06 / B+ / 89.15% / 4 out of 16
Electrical Circuit Engineering / Spring07 / A / 94.37% / 1 out of 21

Mr. Gladiator demonstrated a strong motivation for, an talent in, the engineering subjects . He turned in solid and consistent classroom performances that demonstrate his commitment to the field. Mr. Gladiator always attended class-sessions, and turned in thoroughly completed coursework on the assigned due-dates. He clearly demonstrated very strong motivation and dedication to his academic endeavors.

Mr. Gladiator also displayed outstanding hands-on skills. In the practical lab exercises associated with the Materials course Mr. Gladiator carefully read the instructions, and quickly engaged the tools, instruments, and practical methods needed to execute the laboratory investigation. Mr. Gladiator was so proficient in this regard that many other students sought his assistance. Mr. Gladiator graciously provided this support. He and the other students benefited from his skillful “teaching” style. Mr. Gladiatoralso precisely documented the results of the lab experiments, and produced well organized, accurate, and polished reports.

In the Electrical Circuits course I often observed Mr. Gladiator staying after he completed his lab exercise in order to assist his fellow students. In my estimation Mr. Gladiator could easily finish the labs in half the timeof the average student but he remainedin the laboratory, providing useful suggestions to any group having difficulty.Mr. Gladiator did not perform exercises for the other students, but instead he explained how they mightaccomplish the taskson their own.

In addition, I found Mr. Gladiator to be quite personable, articulate, and practical in his general outlook. He was a pleasure to have in the class room.. He is the type of engaged, confident, and competent student that makes Engineering instruction virtually effortless.

In summary, Mr. Gladiator is a highly motivated and capable engineering student. He is also a polite, courteous, and well-spokenindividual who will bring credit tothe SVEC as an Educational Award recipient. I recommend him in the strongest terms this award.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information regarding Mr. Gladiator’s academic potential and/or character.

Very truly yours,
