ENG2D/G – Summative Task Assignment
This assignment is worth 10% of your final grade in this course.
(Literary Essay 5% and Media Presentations 5%)
For your summative task, you must read a novel, which has been approved by your teacher, and then complete the following tasks:
- a general report about your novel,
- a media product that reflects your novel,
- a 5-6 minute presentation that explains your media product and its reflection on the novel,
- a formal, five paragraph, literary essay about your novel, and
- a reflection about the processes you used to complete the assignment.

In order to complete this presentation, you will need to show that you understand some key literary concepts you have learned in this course. This is a summative project is intended to determine whether you have learned the material covered in this course. You need to be sure that you incorporate some key information you have been taught in English class this year. Failure to incorporate key information from this course into your project may result in a failing mark.

Choose a fiction novel from the list provided and attain approval from your teacher. Bring novel to class every day until the Second Report has been submitted.
STEP 2: First Report Due date: ______
Read the first quarter of your novel and then stop reading. Complete the First Report before you continue reading the novel. This report will be evaluated as part of your term mark (Application – 25 marks).

Read the remainder of your novel and complete a test.

Read the remainder of your novel and complete the Second Report. This report will be evaluated as part of your term mark (Application – 25 marks).
STEP 5: Formal Literary Essay (5%)
Compose a formal, five-paragraph, literary essay (approximately 650-900 words) on your novel.

Revise and edit your essay. Your rough copy must show evidence of revision (i.e., additions, subtractions, substitutions, relocating information, etc.) and editing (i.e., spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar corrections).

Write a two-page, typed, double-spaced reflection (approximately 500 words) based on your novel. Create a brainstorm that addresses the questions below. Make links and write 2-3 formal paragraphs. This reflection will be evaluated as part of your term mark (see rubric).
- How can one of the themes in this novel be applied to your life at Merivale, in Ottawa, in Ontario, in Canada, and/or in today’s world?
- Was this Summative Project useful to you? What did you learn? What didn’t you learn that you would have liked to learn?
- Were the steps of the project useful to you (ie. first and second reports; brainstorm, outline, rough copy, peer editing and final copy of essay; preparing the audio-visuals, cue cards and presenting your projects to the class.) Which parts of the project were especially useful?
- What obstacles (physical, mental or otherwise) did you encounter while completing this project?
- What lessons/ideas can you fold into the next summative project you complete? How can you improve your learning process?
