ENG4U1 Final Performance Task
Throughout the year, we have studied three key works. We have considered people’s writing styles and opinions as presented through a series of essays from our first unit. As well, we have incorporated scholarly arguments/documents into our own analysis of a text in our I.S.U. evaluation. This final performance task will require you to utilize these skills you have developed and your knowledge of the core texts we have studied.
Assignment Expectations:
Ø This evaluation will consist of two components: an interview and a media gallery.
Ø You will have FIVE days in class to read the article you’ve selected, identifying one central assertion you find interesting and would like to explore in your analysis that you will present in a FIVE (5) minute interview to your teacher. Following your FIVE (5) minutes of analysis, you will be asked one of three questions (provided), which you will have an opportunity to prepare in advance. Your analysis should take the form of an oral essay.
Ø The only thing you can bring into the interview is ONE 4x6 cue card.
Ø Everyone has FIVE days to read their selected article and respond analytically in an oral essay format. The one-on-one interviews will begin on Thursday January 19th, 2017 and will run until Tuesday January 24th, 2017. In the meantime, while each student is being interviewed, each student will create a media component, without using technology, that will be displayed in a gallery format on Tuesday January 24th, 2017 (that means that some students will present their one-on-one interview and their media product on the same day).
Ø This media component may take any creative form that visually represents the thesis of your analytical interview.
Ø No computers are permitted, and all work MUST BE DONE IN CLASS. You may bring whatever artistic resources you require to complete the media component in class.
Ø For the media gallery walk on Tuesday January 24th, 2017, you must write a short rationale on a 4x6 cue card explaining why/how the media product represents the assertion derived from your article (your thesis). Just like in an art gallery, your ‘information plaque’ must be placed below your media product. You are not required to stand by your media product to explain it repeatedly to your peers/teacher, this is what your ‘information plaque’/rationale will be for.
Ø This is a final performance task. If you are absent on the scheduled day of your interview or on the gallery walk date, a doctor’s note will be required, or you will receive a mark of zero for the portion of this summative assignment that is worth 10% of your final grade.
The interview questions are as follows:
· You will be asked one of these questions during your one-on-one interview…
1. How has your understanding of the piece of literature been enhanced/altered based on your
reading of this article?
2. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the interpretation of the literature in this article?
3. Critics tend to highlight theme, character, symbolism, structure and language in their textual
analysis. What element has your critic focused on or highlighted the most? Examine why that
element would provoke the most discussion about your text.
