Jeff Kinney is Enderby’s First Iron Chef

Chef Jeff Kinney of the Mabel Lake Golf and Country Club is Enderby's first Iron Chef!

In a heated battle at Kitchen Stadium Enderby on May 24, four of Enderby's most talented chefs faced off. With mango as the secret ingredient, each chef used the sweet and spicy versatility of the fruit to create a three-course meal for four judges within one hour.

Kinney reveals that, despite keeping his cool in front of the camera, the competition held high-pressure challenges. "For the record, it wasn't easy; to be under the gun like that and in front of the cameras with the clock running is not anything like I do on a daily basis. It was stressful. It was a unique experience for me and I had fun doing it."

The winning meal, as prepared by Iron Chef Kinney, began with an appetizer of mango and green chilli lobster medallions. Following this, Kinney's entree featured mango and cilantro stuffed breast of chicken roasted in a cumin crust and served over a mango-coconut risotto and broiled local asparagus. For dessert, Kinney tantalized the judges with a mango and macadamia nut ice cream with brulee of mango, which was served with a spicy red chilli-raspberry coulis and a mini mango phyllo turnover.

Kinney also has high praise for his competitors. "Congratulations to all of the other competitors. Everyone kept it together and managed to complete all their dishes. That, to me, was very impressive. Congratulations as well to the four student assistants who were also in front of the cameras and working with unfamiliar chefs. I am sure they had friends and family in the crowd and were very nervous."

Also competing in the inaugural Iron Chef Enderby were Chef Tundra Baird of Lorenzo's Cafe; Chef Adam Potts of The Cliffs Bistro Pub; and Chef Cyndi Anker of the Paddlewheeler Pub.

The event was broadcast live into the A.L. Fortune Secondary School auditorium in Enderby. Admission was by donation at the door, with all proceeds going towards a scholarship for an A.L. Fortune graduate who is intending to pursue a career in the culinary arts. The value of the scholarship is $675.

"Funny," Kinney quips, "I never thought this before, but I am looking forward to getting back to work so I can relax a little."

For more information, visit the Enderby Iron Chef page on www.enderbychamber.com.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of those who were involved in making this event a success, including the participating restaurants, sous-chefs, volunteers, sponsors, and our gracious hosts, A.L. Fortune Secondary School.

We would like to thank Beryl Ludwig of the Conservative Party, Michel Saab of the Green Party, George Abbott of the Liberals, Chris Emery of the Marijuana Party, and Steve Gunner of the NDP for their participation in the forum.
