Did you know that 4-H clubs are run by our young people? These members learn how to run a meeting, are encouraged to learn public speaking and demonstration skills, and take responsibility for record keeping, and deadlines. 4-H offers non- livestock projects such as photography, gardening, foods, and crafts. With your help, 4-H can continue to inspire BC young people to become contributing leaders in their communities, just as they have for almost 100 years.

Community leaders congratulate Enderby & District Credit Union

Enderby & District Credit Union is pleased to receive notes of congratulations from community leaders for a 2011 Central 1 inNOVAtion Award for its Financial Fitness Series, recently announced in Toronto. The awards program, recognizing the spirit of innovation within Ontario and BC-based credit unions, considered 18 submissions for awards in three categories, including service innovation. The full spectrum of credit unions was represented as submissions were received from credit unions that ranged from under $100 million in assets to over $15 billion.

Enderby & District Credit Union together with Investment Planning Counsel Inc. (IPC) of Enderby began presenting the Financial Fitness Series program to the Planning 10 class at A. L. Fortune Secondary School in 2010, with a “financial checkup” that followed in the spring of this year. The program, highly praised by parents, students, and school officials alike, was planned and delivered to 71 students last year, teaching the basics of budgeting, credit and debt, insurance, taxation, borrowing and investing. The Financial Fitness Series is unique as it marries the Grade 10 high school course material with a financial literacy component, designed especially for students, and accepted as part of the school curriculum.

“We are pleased to recognize the innovative efforts of these winners,” said Linda Archer, Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Human Resources, for Central 1, referring to the winners in three categories. “These projects highlight the creativity and devotion to customer service that are hallmarks of the credit union systems in BC and Ontario.”

One judge noted that the EDCU Financial Fitness Series is “nicely aligned with corporate social responsibility and accountability”; while another gave the program a high score on implementation, because of the enduring tools and relevant information that EDCU left with the students. At the conclusion of the Financial Fitness Series program, students are provided with resources and links to “student-friendly” websites on basic personal money management, financial planning and scholarship/bursary/grant information.

“The staff, management and board of directors are very honoured, proud and excited about this award,” said Ted Morrison, General Manager, Enderby & District Credit Union. “Planning, developing and implementing our vision for a financial literacy program at the high school level is something we had thought about for years, and looking back, I can say that it has been a rewarding experience for all of us,” he stated. “We thank A. L. Fortune Secondary for embracing our program, and parents, teachers and students for supporting us through the process, helping us make the Financial Fitness Series a reality.”

Investment Planning Counsel Inc. (IPC) offers wealth management services at the EDCU branch, and representative Brad Case was instrumental in developing the investment and financial planning session presented to the students. “We are proud to have been a part of the development and delivery of the Financial Fitness Series, and proud of this award,” explained Brad Case. “It’s the culmination of many months of planning and discussion, and it’s most gratifying to see such a prestigious national award going to Enderby & District Credit Union.”

“It hardly seems enough to write and tell you how much we appreciated, and continue to appreciate, the dedication and generosity that Ted Morrison, Brad Case at IPC, Tina Hawkins and the entire Enderby and District Credit Union staff have extended to our students,” stated Abbas El Gazzar, Principal, A. L. Fortune Secondary. “Those students were positively enriched by their contribution and dedication to our school. We were so happy and proud to hear that the EDCU received such a prestigious award. Please share our deepest thanks with the EDCU staff for their personal contribution to our school and to the future of those students. I want you to know that around A. L. Fortune Secondary, the EDCU staff is profoundly appreciated.”

“I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to Enderby & District Credit Union for this well-deserved recognition,” said Minister of Education, George Abbott. “Literacy of every kind is critical to the success of our students as they grow into adults, and its programs like the Financial Fitness Series that help our kids achieve that success. We can all learn a thing or two about managing our finances, and the earlier we do the better. This is a great example of local initiatives that have a huge impact on students, now and in the future.”

Enderby Mayor Howie Cyr, was not surprised to hear that EDCU received national recognition for its Financial Fitness Series. “EDCU has been and continues to be a leader in our community,” he said. “This organization is one of the rocks in our community – a model for others to follow. I have the utmost of admiration for all they do, and congratulate them for their achievement today.”

"On behalf of North Okanagan-Shuswap School District #83, I wish to congratulate Enderby & District Credit Union for this award,” stated Dave Witt, Superintendent, School District #83. “Their national recognition for their financial literacy program is well-deserved; the feedback from teachers and students they have worked with has been very positive."

“We would like to extend a special congratulations to Enderby & District Credit Union who recently won a prestigious national “Spirit of Innovation” award through the 2011 Central 1 inNOVAtion Awards for its community involvement with the Financial Fitness program,” said Jennifer Findlay, Literacy Outreach Coordinator, Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS).

“A place on the national stage for an innovative “made in Enderby” program, is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Darren Robinson, Executive Director of the Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce. “Congratulations to EDCU general manager Ted Morrison, his skilled staff and program partner, Investment Planning Counsel on this prestigious award – you’ve made our community proud.”

This fall, EDCU and Investment Planning Counsel Inc. (IPC) in Enderby took the Financial Fitness Series one step further, by collaborating with chartered accountant Larry Stankoven, Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union, VantageOne Credit Union, the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS) and School District #83, and combining their individual financial literacy programs to reflect 2011 financial issues and information. Through these strong community partnerships and collaboration, they started teaching this coordinated and comprehensive new program to area schools and community groups this fall. The Financial Fitness Series has since evolved into a consistent district-wide program that covers all of the Planning 10 financial literacy learning outcomes, and covers the importance of lifelong financial literacy skills. The initiative has been called “a perfect example of a collaborative community grassroots response to an identified need”. It’s hoped that this new comprehensive and coordinated program presented by these three credit unions will become the template for other programs in the province.

“We greatly appreciate this national recognition, and the accolades that have come to us today,” added Ted Morrison. “We also note that the best reward for us is the knowledge that we are helping students grow into responsible and informed money managers as they make the transition to financial independence after secondary school. We are pleased to give back to our community by bringing our working knowledge into areas of vulnerability and need. It’s an investment into the well-being of our community, and we are proud to continue giving back in that way,” concluded Ted Morrison.

Winter Trails Project creates valuable work experience

The Shuswap Trail Alliance is at it again working with partners, bringing people together, getting people outside, and yes creating employment. The Trail Alliance recently signed an agreement with the Job Creation Partnership program, funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement, to launch a five month work experience program targeting winter trails in the Shuswap.

“The intention is to work with partner organizations to promote getting people outside and on trails during the winter months,” says Shuswap Trail Alliance project coordinator, Phil McIntyre-Paul. “It’s also about creating work experience opportunities in our local communities,” he says, acknowledging the remarkable support of the local JCP programs officer and The Employment Place staff have provided in getting the program launched.

The Winter Trails JCP program has engaged a six person field team and a three person office team. “We’re really excited to be basing the office team in Sicamous,” says long time Sicamous trail advocate and alliance co-founder, Lori Schneider Wood. The District of Sicamous has welcomed the project into the new district civic building where the Trail Alliance will operate a field office through the winter. “It puts us right in the middle of the action,” smiles Lori, who is coordinating the office team.

A few things to watch for include a winter extension of the fall hiking series to introduce snowshoers to local trails, a new social media campaign to get more people linked online, and the field team out keeping trails throughout the region open for winter use. The teams will also benefit from a hands-on opportunity to learn how to use GPS units in the field. “We’re currently building a map inventory of every trail throughout the region,” says Phil. “The Winter Trails team will have an opportunity to help.”
