There comes a time in a watch collector’s life when he must clean out closets, sort through drawers and peek under the mattress (or under the grumpy old dog) to regain some breathing space around the house. My descriptions are honest and succinct, and I take pictures at close range, allowing you to see what the piece really looks like. All watches at Holben's Watch Attic have not been recently serviced and are sold as is – as found – even if they are running at the moment please assume that they will need to be cleaned and serviced by a professional watchmaker.p>The following auction is for an antique timepiece from the Elgin National Watch Company of Elgin, Illinois. This 3/0 size watch dates to 1915 and is in the “Transitional” style, designed to be worn either as a pendant watch (with chain) or as a wrist watch with the proper attachments.
It measures 31mm in diameter or about 1-1/4” in width, not including the winding crown or bow. Its 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism winds and sets properly but it does not keep accurate time and will need to be serviced by a watchmaker. p>The original white porcelain enamel dial is in great condition with just a couple faint hairlines near the 2. It features a 60 minute outer track, black enamel Arabic numerals, blue steel original hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed “ELGIN” below the 12.p>The acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The three-piece case is 10kt Yellow Gold filled and is in great shape with no wear or brassing, very nice. The winding crown is yellow gold finished and in great shape.p> The back lid is made of 10 karat gold fill and is in very good shape, one small ding near the bow but no wear or engravings. Inside is its original 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism, signed Elgin, U.S.A. – 15 Jewels, Double Roller. Very clean movement with nice damasking. This mechanism is complete and does run but does not keep time and will need to be serviced by a watchmaker. The inside case is stamped Fahys Montauk – Guaranteed 20 Years – 3/0. Fahys was based in Long Island (Sag Harbor) and a 20 year case equals 10kt gold fill, possibly 14kt gold filled. The 3/0 is the movement size…a common men’s wristwatch size during this era (WWI military).p>Sold “as found” so please assume it needs serviced/repaired. Thanks for taking a look and I hope you get a good deal on this nice old vintage wristwatch.
Watch sizes: I provide exact measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U.S. quarter in one of my photos as a size reference. Draw the measurements on paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, men’s watches from the 1910s - 1960s were smaller than considered normal today.
U.S. winners pay $3.50 for safely boxed USPS First-Class Mail shipping with online tracking (delivery confirmation). Washington State residents (and those with shipping addresses in Washington State) are required to add 8.6% sales tax. Sorry, but no International shipping on Attic items due to the high cost of traceable shipping (it now costs $49 and up). I still provide international shipping on all my watches at holben’s fine watches.
Payment is due within three [3] days of auction end, unless you’ve contacted me prior to arrange otherwise. In accordance with eBay policy, payments not received in four days will initiate an unpaid item case through the Resolution.
<a href="http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZholbensfinewatches" target="_blank"<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"<img src="http://www.nwlink.com/%7Eholben/holbensfinewatches.jpg" alt="Holben's-Fine-Watches"</span</a
