Bruton Swimmers Code of Conduct

March 2018

Employees of Bruton Swimmers will:

  • Teach within the ethos of Bruton Swimmer, by delivering lessons that are stimulating and ability-appropriate, using praise, fun and humour to develop a positive learning environment
  • Start and finish lessons on time
  • Adhere to Bruton Swimmers Safeguarding Policy
  • Treat all children and parents with respect and dignity, value their worth and treat everyone equally
  • Treat all information of a personal nature about individual swimmers as confidential, except in circumstances where to do so will allow the child to be placed at risk of harm or continue to be at risk of harm
  • Take all reasonable steps to ensure the health, safety and welfare of colleagues, children and their parents
  • Communicate with children in a way that is appropriate to their age and understanding
  • Ensure that their own behaviour, language, gestures and clothing, is appropriate and above reproach
  • Make themselves aware of any medical conditions, allergies, existing injuries and medicine affecting any of the children they have contact with.

It is expected that children will:

  • Get changed in the changing rooms
  • Not eat on poolside
  • Arrive ready to commence their lesson on time
  • Only enter the pool once the teacher has instructed them to (e.g. no dangling feet or arms over the edge).
  • Listen to and follow their teacher’s instructions
  • Cooperate with other children in their class
  • Display reasonable behaviour before, during and after the lessons (no running)
  • Not leave the water unless their teacher has given them permission to do so (e.g. to go the toilet)
  • Not play in the school grounds before or after their lesson.
  • Wear suitable swimwear:
  • We ask that all children dress comfortably and safely and observe the following dress codes and recommendations
  • Hair that is shoulder length or longer should be tied back.
  • Children may choose whether they wish to wear swimming trunks, swimsuits or board shorts irrespective of their sex(no bikinis please as they can fall off easily when jumping in).
  • In the case of girls who prefer to wear trunks or board shorts we request that they wear an appropriate top such as a tankini top, rash vest or similar or wear shorts over a swimming costume, as they approach puberty.
  • Goggles are optional – we recommend Aquasphere Moby Kid or Seal Kid as they seem to fit most head sizes and are adjustable.
  • Swim hats are not essential but are encouraged as they make it easier to manage goggles as well as escaping hair.

It is expected that parents will:

  • Encourage their child to obey the rules and behave in the correct manner
  • Not take their child’s attention away from the teacher during their lesson and will not take the teacher’s attention away from those in the water (e.g. conversations with child/teacher during lesson time).
  • Not take photos or videos of their children during lessons
  • Remain in view of their child whilst their child is in the water and keep noise to a minimum during lesson time
  • Adhere to the school’s parking rules (or even better, leave the car at home and win prizes each term for not using the car).
