Emerson introduces new wireless valve position monitoring solutions

TopWorx™4310 Wireless Position Monitor allows for monitoring of automated and manual valves

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY (December 1, 2010) –Emerson Process Management

At this year’s Valve World Expo, Emerson Process Management exhibited several new wireless position monitoring solutions using the TopWorx 4310 Wireless Position Monitor and Rosemount® 702 Discrete Transmitter.

One of the solutions being shown was a way to retrofit manual valves such as rising stem valves that have previously been impossible to monitor using conventional wired switchboxes or switches. Without a switchbox and a dome indicator, it has been difficult for operators to determine valve position and required field rounds and visual inspection of each valve. The TopWorx 4310 Wireless Position Monitor with sliding stem valve bracket mounts directly on the valve’s hand wheel, allowing it to freely turn with the wheel as the valve is opened and closed. As the valve’s position changes, the 4310 wirelessly communicates open, closed, and partially open valve position to the control system allowing for more reliable monitoring and operation of the valves. Valve sequencing errors can also be eliminated by having a control system automatically monitor the sequencing and position of the valves using these wireless position monitors.

Emerson also demonstrated a way to wirelessly monitor the activation of safety showers and eyewash stations. This wireless monitoring system provides a cost effective way of retrofitting existing safety showers and eyewash stations and can be quickly installed throughout a facility on the shower and eyewash valves in hazardous/non-hazardous locations with no special permits required. A Rosemount® 702 Discrete Transmitter is able to monitor two, latching TopWorx GO Switch Leverless Limit Switches that sense whether a valve has opened and/or flow is occurring. This allows a control system to quickly alarm plant operators if a safety shower or eyewash station in the facility has been activated, drastically improving responder awareness and incident reporting capabilities.

About the TopWorx 4310Wireless Position Monitor

TopWorx 4310 position monitors can be quickly and easily installed on existing valves, regulators, safety showers, level sensors, and other types of instrumentation allowing process variables and diagnostics to be sent back through a wireless gateway to a control system. The TopWorx 4310Wireless Position Monitor is part of Emerson’s Smart Wireless solutions for field instrumentation. Smart Wireless extends PlantWeb™ predictive intelligence into areas that were previously out of physical or economic reach, opening the door for new possibilities in process management.
