EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN (EAP)

For the purposes of Penguins’ EAP, the Manager is Lesley Anne or on a Saturday afternoon, Carol Sherringham. In their absence, the Manager of the day will be written on the whiteboard.

Fire/Gas Leak

If you suspect a fire instruct your children to get out of the pool and notify the Manager and/or Lifeguard. A long whistle will be blown. All remaining teachers and helpers will then evacuate the pool and escort the swimmers to the fire exit at the shallow end of the pool.

An appointed person (see Appendix A attached) will go out to the reception area and look at the panel to see where the fire is indicated and report back to poolside. If the alarm has not gone off by then, the appointed person will press the alarm if needed.

The Leicester Grammar School appointed person in charge of the site must be notified as soon as possible. He/she will also check the building.

Teachers will sit the children down in a line away from the edge of the pool and stay with their group, unless stated otherwise. The register will be taken to ensure all children are safe.

Parents/Guardians and visitors will be escorted from the poolside by an appointed person (see Appendix A) via the entrance/exit to the pool at the shallow end to the reception area, ready to leave the building if necessary. If this exit is deemed unsafe, they will be escorted by appointed person (Appendix A) to the fire exit on poolside. Checks will need to be made of the changing rooms. Where possible a male member of staff will check the male changing room, female member of staff will check the female changing rooms.

If we need to evacuate the building space blankets will be provided for the swimmers.

Guardians will be escorted round to the fire exit at the side of the building. The children will be passed to the guardians class by class. i.e Little Blue, Rockhopper, Gentoo etc. If necessary, swimmers who have siblings in other classes can go together, providing the registers have been taken.

Guardians will take the swimmers to their cars and await further instruction. Clothes and other items must be left in the changing rooms till the building is safe.

Electrical Failure:

Should there be an electrical failure on poolside, all children in the pool are to be instructed to get out of the water by their teacher and sit in a line away from the pool’s edge. The Penguins Manager will ascertain whether it is safe to carry on with the lessons, depending on the teachers’ ability to see all areas of the pool and poolside.

Guardians can get towels to keep the swimmers warm.

If the lighting comes back on then the classes can continue. However, if the lighting fails to come back on after 10 minutes, and the Penguins Manager thinks it is unsafe to swim, the pool area will be evacuated and all swimmers can get changed and leave the site.

Two members of Penguins staff are to man the changing room exits on poolside to ensure that no person re-enters the pool area in poor lighting conditions.

Drowning/Near Drowning

All teachers must have read and understood the NOP and EOP applicable to Leicester Grammar School, Great Glen. If you have not read these, please request a copy from Lesley Anne.

As well as those procedures, the following must apply when dealing with an emergency incident in the pool.

Classes with Helper in the Water

If an emergency occurs in a class with a helper in the water, it is the teacher’s responsibility to rescue the swimmer in difficult and the helper’s responsibility to get the remaining children out of the water to safety. On the weekend sessions, the Lifeguard will enter the water and rescue. We would prefer all teachers to have a current National Teacher Rescue Award.

Classes without Helper in the Water

When an emergency occurs in the pool and a rescue is required, it the teacher’s responsibility (or at the weekend the Lifeguard) to either throw a lifesaving device (float etc) or enter the pool to rescue. The teacher or lifeguard will shout that they are about to enter the pool and the teacher instructing nearby will then get their own class and the other class out of the water to safety.
