Elsie Earl Studios began in 2015 by Loretta Friend in Ann Arbor. It was originally established as an arts and crafts studio offering plaster sculpture painting (“3D Painting”), dollhouse workshops, Indie book club meetings, senior craft mornings and adult painting classes taught by local University of Michigan Museum of Art docents/artists.

The studio expanded to New Buffalo in 2016 when Loretta and her husband, Steven, bought a

second home in downtown New Buffalo during the summer after 25 years of vacationing in Harbor Country. The studio added the gallery gradually beginning that winter. After closing shop

in Ann Arbor, Loretta began bringing arts and crafts to senior living centers in Ann Arbor with plans for the same in Harbor Country.

Elsie Earl Studios’ namesake originates from Loretta’s parents, Arlene Elsie and Earl. Now deceased, both parents were always very supportive of her creative endeavors. Arlene Elsie spent her career as a systems analyst for the federal government’s Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. and Earl was a professional guitarist, french hornist, vocalist and co-creator and director of the Sea Chanters with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington D.C. Both rest in Arlington Cemetery near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
