ELMS PTA MEETING 9/12/12 MINUTES

Meeting opened at 7.04pm

Welcome by Menia and a request for people to think about shadowing her as she will only be PTA President for this year.

Everyone present introduced themselves

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:

Sept & Oct are busy months.

  • Magazine drive is now on – we get $15 for each address book returned, if every family returned that completed we would reach out target for this fundraiser. We are currently at over $7000 after 2 days so on target for budget goal. Thanks to Rosemary for organizing and coordinating this fundraiser. Volunteers to help out please contact Rosemary Littlefield 8.30am onwards Friday 14th, Mon 17th and Wed 19th.
  • Rosemary will be here next year to coordinate the magazine drive again but will need someone to shadow her next year to take over for the following year.
  • Banners were purchased by the PTA to celebrate the CAS award, that will go in front of the school and should be here soon.
  • Picture Day 17th and 18th September

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

  • Smooth opening of school, the parent drop off is much smoother this year with traffic being directed.
  • Sept 28th Celebration for CAS award. Representatives from the US Dept of Education and State government will be attending for the schoolwide assembly. All students will receive t-shirts made by the ELHS design class.
  • There will also be make your own sundaes with supplies being donated by Tri – Town
  • In November there will be a celebration for faculty at the Aquaturf
  • At the October meeting there will be a presentation on the Common Core State Standards
  • We now have Smartboards in every academic classroom and more computer stations in the library.

MEMBERSHIP:

  • Approx. 110 so far with more collected today.
  • Single membership is $8 for one person and gives one vote at meeting
  • Family membership is $13, covers two people and allows for two people to vote at a meeting.

TREASURER:

  • Last year was an approximate loss of $600 due to increased enrichment activities, was viewed as an acceptable expenditures due to savings currently held of approx $22,000.
  • This year we are forecasting a $1200 loss due to the purchase of the CAS celebratory banners – this will be taken from the savings account.
  • For this years budget we kept the increase in the Clay Washington fund and increased the library fund to $1500 from $1000
  • For teacher resources, the treasurer will keep in contact with the kiva teachers and inform them when they have reached their budgeted limits.
  • Motion to approve budget proposed by Paula Page and seconded by Tanya Deveau.

PIES FUNDRAISER:

  • Meghan Canbridge will be running this fundraiser. Sample pies will be here for people to taste at the Open House. The pies are $18 each and come in various flavours. Pick-up will be the last Friday before Thanksgiving from ELMS cafeteria. If you can help on this day please contact Meghan
  • We receive 40% on this fundraiser

BOOK FAIR

  • Running from Oct 19 to 26th. It will be open in th evenings on the 25th and 26th while the Taste of the Arts and Halloween Party are on. Tina Gooding is the chairperson for the Book Fair
  • Our ELMS librarian is very supportive of the book fair and last year was able to receive approx $1600 worth of books from Scholastic (this is scholastic dollars)

HALLOWEEN SOCIAL

  • Will be on October 26th from 6 – 8pm
  • Will be coordinated by Tanya Deveau, if you can help contact help needed betwween 2.30 onwards to 8.30pm Whateveryou can do would be welcome.
  • If anyone has feedback from last year as to what games the kids preferred Tanya would like to know.
  • There will be no tickets sold on the door, all tickets will be presold during lunchtimes.
  • Please have children turn off any cell phones during the event.

OPEN HOUSE:

  • 20th will be both Sound house and Bay house. This is for parents not the children. Be aware that football and cheering will also be taking place on the surrounding fields so parking may be trickier than usual, leave plenty of time.
  • 27th is Ocean House Open House

OTHER BUSINESS

  • Board of Ed report from Judy DeLeeuw, discussions on recess, large class sizes at LBH and the Superintendent talked about his goals.
  • Meghan Cambridge mentioned she had been approached about a possible fundraiser with Ladybug boutique – more details to come at next meeting
  • Ann Seibel will remain as communication chair
