II.COURSE INFORMATION
Description:
- ELL111 Introduction to English Literature is two-credit required course.
Course Content:
- ELL111 Introduction to English Literature introduces students of English Language and Literature with literary genres like fiction [novel], drama and poetry. Each genre and sample texts form each of them will be introduced and discussed.
Course Objective:
- The aim of the present course is to introduce and teach literary narratives such as prose, drama and poetry. It is an introductory-course to the literary understanding and critical reading that aims to prepare the first year students for the advance-literature courses in the second, third and fourth yearsof the English Language and Literature Department. Students taking ELL111 and ELL112 will be familiar with each literary genre like novel, drama and poetry and they will be able to develop further critical reading and writing ability.
Student Responsibility:
- Students of English Language and Literature department taking Introduction to English Literature are responsible to read the related chapter[s] in the course-book and reading materials[s] before the class-hour and they have to attend the class discussion during the semester. Students may be divided into groups and be expected to give short presentation and group discussion in the classroom.
- Speaking in English during the class-hour is required. Improvements will not be made without doing so. All students should/must participate in class-discussions.
Timetable:
- Chapters from Explorations in World Literature [course-book] by Schaffer-Koros and Reppyand various books about literature and English Literature will be read each week. Students are going to create a circle (group) every week to discuss the texts and answer the comprehension question. Assignment will be given to each circle (group) in advance. The circle is responsible to get ready and lead the discussion on the assigned topics.
*Grading:
- 1.Group-work (literary circle), Participation, 2.Oral Quizzes, 3.Mid-tern 4. Final will determine the performance and grade of each student in ELL111.
- Literary Circle: the lecturer will create one circle from four to five students. Each circle will be responsible for the topics provided by lecturer. The circle of students is responsible to make a research, prepare questions, open and lead a discussion, make comparison and contrast, and come to conclusion on the assigned topic.
Additional Information:
- Extra-reading material will be given and provided by the Lecturer during the semester to intensify students’ understanding and critical reading-writing ability.
- The instructor has right to change the grading, content and time-line identified in the syllabus.
