Course Description 12th Grade AVID Elective Class

Major Concepts/Content: Major Concepts/Content: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year‐long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, tutor‐facilitated study groups, college application and financing guidance, and academic success skills. In AVID students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth.

Goal: All students will have gained the academic fortitude to apply, and be accepted to a 4-year university, while pursuing financial assistance.

Materials Needed for Class
  1. 2-3 inch binder with tabs/dividers
  2. College ruled notebook paper
  3. Pens (black, blue, red)
  4. Pencil pouch
  5. Planner – Provided. It will be checked often, and should include all academic due dates, study sessions, college deadlines, and extra-curricular activities.
Grading Scale

100%-90% = A 89%-80% = B 79%-70% = C 69%-60% = D 59%-50% = F

Grading will be based on the following: (approx.)

1. Tutorials and Formal Thursdays20%

2. Accountable Independent Reading10%

3. College Preparatory Classwork70%

AVID 12 Expectations

  1. Maintain a 2.5 GPA, no F or D grades on transcripts
  2. Demonstrate exemplary citizenship
  3. Participate in a club or a sport
  4. Apply to four 4-year universities and one community college
  5. Complete and submit a minimum of 10 scholarships
  6. Attend the National College Fair October 24th
  7. Apply for FASFA (October)
  8. Read two hours a week from an independent reading book

Classroom Expectations

  1. Come to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn.
  2. Respect the space and property of fellow students.
  3. Listen to directions and follow them.
  4. Actively participate.
  5. Turn in all assignments on time. When absent, it is the responsibility of the student to request missing work.
  6. Portable electronic devices will be enjoyed outside of class. If I see it, I will take it and you can pick it up at the end of the day. Multiple violations will result in a referral.
  7. Bring your independent reading book to each class.

Classwork will be student driven and project based. During Sem. 1, students will be focusing their classwork on their “College Admissions Checklist”, FAFSA, scholarship applications, college applications, and TRFs. The instructor’s role will be to facilitate student’s growth through mentorship, deadline accountability, and resource management. Sem. 2 will continue focusing on scholarship applications, college life, mock interviews, college applications, TRFs, and avoiding “senioritis.”
