Title: How to complete a lab report in 7th Grade Science

Purpose/Problem: Do 7th grade Science students know how to complete a formal lab report?

Introduction

This year, 7th grade science students will demonstrate science learning in various ways. One such way will involve the formal science lab report which will be typed and submitted for a grade. Often times, students may be confused by all of the processes that are involved with scientific investigations. Completing a lab report enables students to sort out the steps and organize the information that they collect during a lab investigation. The formal lab report is a useful, working document that students complete as they make observations, manipulate variables, and analyze the results of their problem-solving activities.

Hypothesis

If I demonstrate how a lab report should be completed, then students will be successful in completing a lab report on their own.

Variables

Independent Variable: completing a lab report for the students

Dependent Variable: student understanding of how to complete a lab report for science class

Controlled Variables: all students will receive the same example, I will explain all sections of the report thoroughly, all students will practice completing a lab report using this example

Materials

This example page, loose-leaf paper, pencil, Vitruvian Theory lab pages, experiment report template

Procedure

  1. Take out your tangerine experiment report template (Appendix E of your ISN).
  2. Get a copy of “how to complete a science lab report” from the teacher.
  3. On a sheet of loose-leaf paper, begin to complete a lab report for the Vitruvian Theory activity.
  4. Write neatly and in pencil.
  5. Do not skip any sections.
  6. Do not waste time playing and talking with other classmates.
  7. Turn your work in to the teacher for a grade.
  8. All work is due at the end of the class period.

Data tables, charts, and graphs

In this section you must draw the 1st two data tables from your Vitruvian Theory activity.

Observations

Students were very disciplined and on-task while working on the assignment to complete their first science lab report. Students raised their hands and asked questions when confused. Because students worked diligently for the entire class period, all completed the assignment and went on to have a wonderful day!

Conclusion and Inferences

My hypothesis is proven. Students followed the instructions in this document and on their tangerineexperiment report template. Every student in each class completed their first science lab report in 7th grade! The lab report helped each student to organize his or her thoughts and to also organize the data that they collected during their investigation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Theory.

The students were reluctant at first, but grew more at ease as they successfully completed each section. All future lab reports will be completed and submitted on time for every student.

If we had to do this activity again, I think it would be even more beneficial to attach this document to the tangerineexperiment report template. Our school is currently working to conserve resources, so emailing this document to students and/or guardians may be an option.
