BOARD OF EDUCATION
February 6, 2018
The Braxton County Board of Education met on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Burnsville
Elementary. The following members were present:
Jill Cooper, President
Dave Hoover, Vice President
Shane Brown
Van Carr
Brad Shingler
Jill Cooper called the regular board meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Burnsville Elementary students led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dave Hoover led the opening prayer.
The Burnsville Elementary LSIC gave a presentation.
The Burnsville Public Library gave an update.
Donna Dever spoke as a delegation on behavioral issues at Davis Elementary. Diane Allison
spoke as a delegation regarding the minutes for the emergency board meeting.
Brad Shingler moved to convene into executive session under 6-9A-4 (a) (3) student issues,
and (7) investigation. Dave Hoover seconded the motion.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
The Board convened into executive session at 6:25 p.m.
Shane Brown moved and Brad Shingler seconded to reconvene into regular session.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
The Board reconvened into regular session at 8:18 p.m. with no action taken.
President Jill Cooper stated that they had discussed issues regarding a student and have established a plan.
Dave Hoover moved and Van Carr seconded to approve the consent agenda items
(approval of January 23, 2018 meeting minutes, payment of bills, budget transfers and
supplements, transportation requests).
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Shane Brown moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve the following personnel actions:
Resignations – Professional:
1. Manuel Arambula – Substitute Teacher effective February 7, 2018
2. Diane Allison – 21st Century Substitute Teacher at Flatwoods Elementary effective
February 7, 2018
Employment/Reassignment – Service:
Christie Skidmore – Special Education Supervisory/Instructional/Transportation Aide
(Itinerant) at Sutton Elementary effective February 7, 2018
Employment – Extracurricular:
1. Larry Blake Baldwin – Baseball Coach at BCMS effective 2017-18 sport season
2. Brian Francisco – Head Track Coach at BCHS effective 2017-18 sport season
Request to have Names added to Substitute Teacher List:
1. Beth Atkins
2. Pat McPherson
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Brad Shingler moved and Van Carr seconded to approve fundraisers for Burnsville
Elementary, Davis Elementary, Flatwoods Elementary, Little Birch Elementary, Sutton
Elementary, BCMS and BCHS.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Shane Brown moved and Brad Shingler seconded to Heather Hardway as Parent Volunteer
for 2017-18 school year.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Brad Shingler moved and Van Carr seconded to approve an early graduation request.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Brad Shingler moved and Shane Brown seconded to table the discussion of possible make-up
days.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
Brad Shingler moved and Shane Brown seconded to adjourn.
Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.
The meeting adjourned at 8:31 p.m.
The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at
Braxton County Middle School, 100 Carter Braxton Drive, Sutton.
