Reminders:

The district will plan a variety of staff development opportunitiesfor educators based on district initiatives and needs.

Some sessions will be required, while other sessions are optional.

Not all educators will have assigned meetings, and individuals not attending staff development sessions are expected to work in their buildings.

Most sessions require registration via SDOnline, Horry County School’s Online Staff Development Registrationsystem. SD Online is the best place to check for session updates.

To register, click on this SD Online link, or:

1) Go to the Horry County Schools website:

2) Under the Staff tab at the right-hand side of the page, click on Staff Development.

3) Under the links on the left, click on Access SD Online.

4) Login with your full HCS email address OR six-digit employee ID. Password is last four digits of your SSN. Click Enter.

5) Click on the SD Online icon at the bottom.

6) To explore and register for staff development sessions, click on the Signup tab at the left. You can search for sessions by title, keywords, facilitator, location, content area, or date.

7)Click on a workshop to select it, click Signup then Confirm Signups.

8)Verify your schedule by clicking on My Sessions. After the session, you’ll find your certificate here, as well.

Teachers should already have a desire to implement technology in the classroom tomorrow and publish work via school webpage. Topics may include the following: Audacity, PhotoStory, VoiceThread, MovieMaker, Publishing on the School Webpage, Google Docs. Be sure you know your login and password for your teacher web page, and that you have proper privileges! See your school’s technology contact to get this before the 19th. Without your login, you won’t be able to participate in this hands-on learning experience. Be prepared to have a brief introduction with some work time built into the session. If you bring your laptop, make sure you have your power cord and Internet cable if it’s not configured for wireless.

Description: Are you interested in maximizing your use of PowerPoint? Join us at this session where we will cover the following topics and strategies: basic slide design and variations, how to insert pictures, movie clips and sound files, review games, and templates. If possible participants should bring a flash drive with the following saved on it: at least one mp3 (music) file, one video clip, and pictures. The above items can also be saved on your “H drive” to be used during the session if you do not have a flash drive.

Description: Shared Inquiry Training: Level 1 is associated with the Junior Great Books Foundation. Teachers learn questioning techniques and strategies to address nonfiction texts. Teachers must attend 10 hours over the course of two days, and they will receive a certificate for a set of classroom materials. Teachers must attend the session on January 19, 2010 from 8:00 until 4:00 AND the follow-up session on January 20, 2010 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m.


Middle School Health Educators: Accepting the Challenge

Description: At the beginning of the school year, Dr. Elsberry discussed both the challenges and the rewards of the journey ahead of us in “Reaching Our Destination.” Middle School Health Education Teachers are invited to accept the challenge and spend a day of teambuilding out on the Ropes Course in a Project Adventure-style workshop. Participants will face team and individual challenges, learn to work together in facing these challenges, and learn how to translate that into providing the best in Health Education for our HCS students. The workshop will include low and high elements on the Ropes Course. Wear tennis shoes, active wear and be sure to check the weather the day before & dress accordingly. Lunch will not be provided. Dress in active wear-style clothing & tennis shoes. It may be cold so gloves, hat, and a very warm jacket may be necessary. Check the weather the night before and dress accordingly.

Description: Sounds In Motion is a program that can be used with an entire class or a small group to teach the development of active listening, phonemic awareness, auditory discrimination, and articulation skills. Based on the linguistic work of Guberina and developed by Santore, the program uses body movements that contain the elements of pitch, tension, duration, intensity, and the placement of the articulators to teach students phonemes.
