Electromagnetism & Lorentz Force (physics 2)

1) The following diagram shows a wire laying along the plane of the paper. A conventional current flows from left to right. Draw the magnetic field associated with the current.

positive charges

2) This time the wire is perpendicular to the plane of the paper. The dot shown represents the wire as it goes through the paper. A current of electrons is running DOWN into the paper. Draw the magnetic field associated with this current.

3) Below is a diagram of a coil of wire carrying a conventional current that is flowing from the left end of the wire through to the right end. Draw the magnetic field that is associated with this coil.

4) What can the coil from #3 be used for?

5) The following diagram shows a uniform magnetic field running east-to-west across the plane of the paper. Several charged particles are in the magnetic field, the instantaneous velocity of each shown with an arrow. For each particle, identify the direction of the resulting force that acts on the particle.

6) This time the magnetic field is coming out of the paper, in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the paper (the dots show the field lines coming toward you). Four particles are shown moving toward the field from different directions. For each particle, draw the path the particle will take once it encounters the magnetic field.

7) A proton moving to the right is deflected downward, as shown in the diagram below. what is the direction of the magnetic field encountered by the proton?

8) Imagine a uniform magnetic field running west-to-east in front of you. You are holding a loop of wire such that the loop is horizontal. You place the loop into the magnetic field and apply a current to the loop which runs in the clockwise direction. Describe what happens to the loop.

9) How could you get this loop to spin continuously? Explain.
