UTMB Applicant Instructions

Membership Information:

The University of Texas System Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education was formed as both a ‘working’ service academy and an ‘honorific’ body that recognizes and utilizes faculty excellence in health sciences’ education in The University of Texas System health institutions. The Academy seeks diverse members representing the many disciplines contributing to health science education.

Each of the 6 UT Health Science institutions will coordinate their own system to identify up to four nominees annually to apply for Academy membership. Of these nominees, up to twelve new members may be elected annually.

Membership Criteria:

Membership in the Academy is based on the criteria established in the Bylaws as stated below.

1) Breadth and variety of the educational contributions including direct teaching;

2) Quantity and quality of the educational contributions; including curriculum developments, instructional design or re-design, and assessment of learner performance

3) Quality and innovativeness of the educational contributions measured by outcomes;

5) Reputation as an educator; including mentoring and counseling

6) Length of time at health science center(s) with active involvement in educational efforts.

7)Educational administration and leadership

8)Likelihood of being an active participant and contributor to the Shine Academy

To be considered for membership, a UTMB faculty member must submit the following materials no later than close of business on Friday June 19, 2015.

1)Completed candidate membership form (attached)

2)An NIH-equivalent Curriculum Vitae of up to 4 pages that includes accomplishments in education. Do not submit a full CV. Only include leadership, service, publication and research accomplishments that are relevant to education and explain the relevance.

3)Two (2) letters of support, as follows:

  • One (1) peer letter of support (include details about candidate’s educational expertise. Can be from faculty at the home or other institution)
  • One (1) learner letter of support (explain howthe learner benefited from the educational expertise of the candidate)

A combined committee of Academy of Master Teachers and Faculty Senate members will recommend four UTMB faculty to Drs. Jacobs and Callender for consideration. The UT Academy will make the final section from members nominated from each institution. Selections will be announced in the fall and induction of new members will occur in conjunction with the annual Innovations in Health Science Education Conference in Austin on Thursday, February 18th and Friday, February 19th, 2016.

7.Personal statement: Provide a discussion of your educational philosophy e.g. why you teach, how you teach, professional development efforts in education i.e. how you learned and continue to learn to teach. Limit 500 words.
8.Mentoring: List up to 5 activities and/or publications co-authored with students and/or trainees that demonstrate mentoring with description of your mentoring role.
9.Education materials: List all publications in education, products in education and other educational materials e.g. movies, online instruction, textbook chapters, workshops, seminars, etc.
10.Peer providing supporting letter (1): Name, title, affiliation and relationship to nominee; “Peer” includes faculty at your own and other institutions etc. with similar educational responsibilities. The letter of support must be submitted with this application.
11.Learner providing supporting letter (1): Name, title, affiliation and relationship to nominee; “Learner” includes undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students, fellows, faculty etc.The letter of support must be submitted with this application.
