“Honey bee health and pollinator politics in New York State”
My dissertation examines how beekeeping is changing in response to honey bee health challenges. Contemporary politics over pollinator protection have roots in the origins of New York State’s beekeeping extension program and the historical professionalization of beekeeping and agriculture more broadly.Through interviews and participatory action research, I show how competing visions of “sustainable beekeeping” are being shaped by the politics of expertise and divergent ideas around stewardship of the environment; indeed, honey bees themselves are hybrid, part wild animal and part industrial livestock.
