Objectives:

  • To learn how to read the following words thus enhancing their vocabulary. (warm, cool, up, down, ugly, beautiful, big, small, in front, behind, short, long, sad, happy, hot, cold, late, early, thin, fat, light, dark, night, day, in, out)
  • To be able to match the correct opposites and to use them in sentences, etc.
  • To enhance the children’s vocabulary.

ICT objectives:

  • To become better users of the truck, line and typewriter tools in Kidpix.
  • To improve their fine motor skills when handling the mouse.
  • To become better users of the drag and drop technique when using the mouse.

Introduction:

  1. Ask two children to come out near the teacher. Try and find two children that vary in height. Now tell the children one is tall and the other is short. In this way you start from a concrete example of what opposites are.
  2. Start the PowerPoint presentation. Tell the children that Fuzzy (a caterpillar) is going on the mountains to visit a castle.

Development:

  1. While going through the PowerPoint presentation stick flash cards on the white board of the key words mentioned in the objectives. These words are all highlighted in red in the presentation.(warm, cool, up, down, ugly, beautiful, big, small, in front, behind, short, long, sad, happy, hot, cold, late, early, thin, fat, light, dark, night, day, in, out)
  2. While doing the presentation encourage the children to read the sentences themselves. Discuss the pictures. You may also ask the children to think what might happen next before going to the next slide.
  3. When the presentation is over go back to the flash cards and read through them again.
  4. Then pull out the flash cards, mix them up and ask the children to help you to match the opposites.
  5. Since we are dealing with a year 2 class it may be wise to explain the onscreen activities on the monitor before sending the children to work on the computer.
  6. Now divide the class in 3 groups. One group will be working the onscreen activities on the computer. One group will be working on the handouts and the last group will be playing a SNAP game.

Conclusion:

  1. Ask the children to come back in their places. Go through the book which the children have been doing. Ask the children to read any sentences that they wrote beneath the pictures.

Homework:

  1. Any one of the handouts will do. This depends on which handout has been worked out in class.

Onscreen activities

The onscreen activities are graded. The aim is to allow all children of different abilities to feel successful in the lesson.

OPOSIT01.bmp

  1. This is the easiest on screen activity although it still offers challenge to the children. The children have two tasks. First they have to match the opposites (words) using the line tool. Then they have to match the opposite pairs with the correct pictures.
  2. This activity also helps to develop the children’s fine motor skills apart from ensuring that the children can read the opposites, match the correct pairs and understand their meaning since they can match the words to the correct picture.

FARFET02.bmp

  1. This activity may be a little more demanding since the children have sentences rather than words only. However, to ensure that different ability children can perform the task, the opposites have been underlined in red. The children have to find the correct opposite and drag it to the appropriate place.
  2. The children have an instruction at the bottom of the page to show them which truck carriage they have to use. The aim is to help children who may still have difficult with handling the mouse. In this way all they have to do is to place the selected carriage on the word, drag the word and let go at the desired destination.

FARFET03.bmp

  1. In this activity children have a set of number coded words. The children are to find the correct opposite from the list of words below and write them in the grid in the correct cells.
  2. The children have to use the typewriter tool to write the words in the correct cells.

FARFET04.bmp

  1. This activity is the most demanding. Children have to read the clues and guess the answer to the clues. Then they have to write the answer in the cross word using the typewriter tool.
  2. NB: Although the word caterpillar is the answer to one of the clues the children should be able to spell the word correctly since it is written in one of the clues. Try and let them realise this on their own rather than spelling it for them or telling them to search for it on the screen.

Handouts

The handouts focus on the opposites. While working on the handouts children may refer to the flash cards which were stuck on the board during the presentation.

Opposites01.doc

  • In this handout children have a number of sentences. They are to read the sentences and fill in the blanks with the opposites.
  • These have been given to the children in a box at the bottom of the handout. The children have a set of pictures to help them understand better the meaning of the sentences.

Opposites02.doc

  • In this handout children have three tasks to perform. First they are to match the opposites. Then they are to match the pairs with the correct pictures. In this way one can ensure that the children understand what they are reading.
  • The third task requires the children to find the opposites of a set of words in a word search. Children may refer to the flash cards which were used during the presentation if they are in difficulty.

Opposites03.doc

  • In this handout children are to write the opposites of a set of given words in the grid. The fact that the words written in a grid helps the children to self-correct their work.
  • Then they are to colour in the pictures in such a way so as to match the opposites. E.g. the tea and ice cream show a pair of opposites (hot and cold). Therefore children may colour both the tea cup and the ice cream in yellow. Then they go to another pair and colour the pair with the same colour, but not yellow.

Opposites04.doc

  • In this handout the children again have three tasks. First they to find the odd one out. The remaining two words should be opposite. Then they have to match the opposites with the correct pictures. This ensures that the children understand the meaning of the words.
  • The third task involves the children to finish off the sentences using the relevant opposite of the underlined word. They must also use the pictures in their sentences. E.g. if there is a monster in the picture, then the sentence must include the word monster.

SNAP

  • The children will be given a pack of cards. First they are to lay all the cards on the table and help each other to match the opposites. They may take turns in reading them out to the group before proceeding to the game. In this way you ensure that the children can read the words and are familiar enough with the words to play SNAP.
  • The children are to deal all the cards. They then take turns to place the cards face up on the table (one on top of the other). Every time two consecutive cards make a pair of opposites the children are to call out SNAP. The first to say SNAP takes the cards in the pool. The winner is the one to take all the cards.
