Committee Members Present

  1. Opening Items
  2. Welcome -Dr. Farris called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm and thanked those in attendance for coming.
  1. Introductions - Committee members introduced themselves, their roles, and the schools they represent.
  1. Wellness Policy Discussion
  2. Purpose of Committee -Dr. Farris addressed the purpose of the committee is to comply with Board Policy and Administrative Regulations 5030 concerning student wellness, and comply with the mandates of the National School Lunch Program as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture. The aforementioned regulations compel the District to have a wellness committee that meets periodically to review the policy, evaluate the extent to which we are meeting the regulations therein, and make recommendations to the Board of Education on a periodic basis. This committee will review the policies, collect information from the school sites on the strategies, activities, and methods of satisfying those mandates and compile them in a single summative report.
  1. Review of Current Board Policy and Administrative Regulations -Board Policy 5030 and Administrative Regulation 5030 were distributed to the committee for review and to allow for clarification questions.
  1. Priority Areas of Focus for the Committee - The committee will embark on data collection as part of the review of wellness activities and programs across the district. Toni Lipscomb distributed surveys to the committee for students, parents, and teachers. These will be sent out to stakeholders over the next week.

Discussion

  1. The committee discussed sources of funding for wellness activities and observed that most wellness activities at school sites are funded by PTA.
  2. The committee recognized an area of focus should be to ensure that formal wellness committee meetings should occur at each school site.
  3. Another observation was made that many wellness programs are driven by individuals, and when those individual are no longer with a school, the programs tend to decline or be discontinued. Future wellness activities and programs should be developed with an infrastructure that will be conducive to the long-term life of the program.
  4. A recommendation was made that students should be invited to our committee.
  5. The committee discussed the observation that school food is a hot topic among parents. Toni Lipscomb shared that all nutritional content of meals are available on the District website. We discussed using social media as a means to promote awareness.
  1. Wellness Activities at Schools; Announcements and Celebrations

All school sites have wellness activities and programs. The committee discussed Growing Great, garden programs, the Jog-a-thon, Cougar Run Club, the RSS Dance Party, and a lunchtime DJ to promote dancing and fitness during lunch at RSS.

  1. Next Steps for the Committee
  2. Committee members will gather information from school administrators about activities and events that promote wellness and a good health at each school site.
  3. Complete surveys and return to Toni.
  4. Review Board policy and prepare questions or comments for next meeting.
  5. Log on to Facebook and “like” the District Facebook page.
