Meeting Notes
March 3, 2010

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 8:30 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 2.
Phil Sutton is facilitating the meeting during Jose Anaya’s absence.
Review of Minutes from February 5th meeting

Department Updates
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Alicia Zambrano:
1) The SB 70 grant focuses on working with high schools and middle schools to work on CTE career exploration projects. In the high schools we are implementing Project Lead the Way with our partners Cerritos College and Compton Center.
2) On February 20th at the Compton Center had its 2nd annual free tax services event for low income individuals. This year 65 families were served. Experts from TurboTax were available to assist everyone.
3) Working on recruiting students for the Robotics class. The next level has started. 18-20 students have registered.
4) Scheduling appointments at Davis and Wilbur middle schools to do career exploration.
5) Collaboration with Gardena High School to implement Project Lead the Way.
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Karen Hess:
6) Under SB 747, provided JPL tour for DaVinci High School.
7) One hundred middle school students will attend the El Camino College Tour on April 28th funded by SB 70.
8) On March 11th, the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Tech Prep Collaborative Meeting will take place. John Maris Coots will be the guest speaker.
9) On May 27th, the STEM Conference will have Jim Brazell speak. In addition, there will be workshops for counselors, faculty and administrators. We expect over 300 people to attend.
10) Attending Educating for Careers Conference in Dallas, TX in October to learn more about grants and other opportunities.
11) Chevron Grant: filling E-tech class on campus.
12) Planning Space Day; getting robotics teams together to present.
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:
1) A proposal is being prepared for the Air Force to develop a “summer robotics camps” for service kids in Alaska, Hawaii, Korea and Japan.
2) A proposal is being prepared for the Department of Education for a $100,000 grant to develop programs for 7th and 8th graders. It will be related to the Project Lead the Way project which is already well established among our partner schools.
3) The high school Machine Tool Technician and Welding programs are underway at Compton Center and ECC.
4) The first Career and Technical Education (CTE) grant is over at the end of this month and the final report will be written. All the goals and objectives of the program were exceeded.
o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Classes are in place for the summer schedule. Currently in the process of designing the catalog.
2) Kids Camp Expo is taking place in Redondo Beach. We will be promoting our classes for elementary, grades 1-5 and high school students. Kid’s College has a listing in LA Parent magazine and the response has been favorable. Still don’t know where on campus the classes will be held at this time.
3) Officially approved for the Food Handler Certificate through the Los Angeles County Health Department. We are listed on their website as a provider for this certificate.
4) Our second Pharmacy Technician class started with 15 students.
o Organizational Development and Training – Maricela Vital:
1) March has 8 new classes starting with 197 students scheduled to be trained. City of Torrance has started its 3rd Customer Service Academy. It looks like we have 5 classes scheduled for April.
o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:
1) Star Van Buren is in Michigan attending a PEERspectives Roundtable program. This program is licensed by the Edward Lowe Foundation and will be offered by the ECC SBDC later this year. It will provide a structured setting where business owners can discuss issues affecting their businesses in a non-competitive environment and provide networking opportunities.
2) Two new workshops were held this month and proved to be great successes: 1) How to Start an Artisanal Packaged Food Business taught by Larry Bressler and 2) SBIR/STTR Grants taught by James Kilgore. These workshops will be offered again due to a favorable demand.
3) Participated in the 22nd Annual High-Tech Small Business Conference with NASA/JPL in coordination with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
4) Los Angeles Region SBDCs are trying to standardize forms throughout region for addressing the needs of the clients. The forms will go from first call on through consulting and capturing all economic impact data.
5) Internal audit will take place in April.
o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Beverly Anthony, Roberto Pandolfi, Maryann Cohan
Computer Lab – Beverly Anthony
1) Nine individuals from Pacific Gateway are receiving training in computer technology. These are individuals that have been laid off. We are also providing information on writing resumes and interviewing skills.
2) Computer training is being provided to 3 cohorts of Occupational Therapy Training Program (OTTP) foster care youth on Saturdays during March, April, and June. They will receive 16 hours of training each.
Prisons – Roberto Pandolfi:
Terminal Island
1) AutoCad has started. Welding began March 1st. A Solar class is also beginning this month. Parenting classes are on-going. The Wheelchair Repair program will have its third class in April. The next Job Fair will take place in April or May. Dates for the warden to visit our facility have been submitted.
2) Metropolitan Detention Center Parenting class is in progress.
South Bay Center for Counseling:
1) Funds released for training by the SBCC. Two individuals have received training.
Maritime Training:
1) Two Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) classes have been scheduled for March.
2) We are approved for the Vessel Security Officer (VSO) training program and have been listed on the U.S. Coast Guard web page. By July 1, 2010 this class will be required by the Coast Guard. Denise DiPasquale converted VSO curriculum chapters to PowerPoint. Currently In the process of promoting the class.
o Center for International Trade Development:
1) Meeting on March 25th at the Los Angeles Chamber to speak to high school counselors regarding options in international trade.
2) Hawthorne High’s International Trade Academy has developed a website for their product and a product catalog (product is virtual). The participating 8 students will be judged on their entrepreneurial skills at the competition in New York.
3) Finished Request for Application (RFAs) for CITD rebid, Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) Green and Responsive Training Fund.
4) Applying for an E-Award for export service.
5) Currently writing scripts for Podcasts.
6) Working on UCLA Extension paperwork and course preparation for upcoming Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) class.
7) Continuing trade orientations and client consultations. Trade orientations are scheduled for March 10th, 17th, and 31st.
8) Converting Supply Chain Management curriculum to an on-line course via the CCC Confer System.
9) Market Certified Cargo Screening Program (CCSP) event will be March 22nd.
10) Working on International Trade Compliance Institute (ITCI) website developments.
11) Doing Green Export Enabler Program (GEEP) client recruitment. Visited China Mart LA regarding synergies with them and GEEP. China trip scheduled from March 9th through the 20th.
Discussion
o State Budget: preparing for May revise.
o Re-bid for EWD programs: Jose is attending meetings in Sacramento regarding the RFAs and what is going to happen. The grant awards will be announced on March 8th. There will be fewer centers.
