EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY, ADO-EKITI

IGR SUMMIT

26TH – 28TH JANUARY, 2016

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING’S POSITION

A.Review of Existing IGR Drives, their impact on the University

SN / Existing IGR Drives / Impact on the University’s IGR Base / Recommendations
1 / Tuition fees paid by undergraduate students / Average / Measures (e.g. e-learning, e-notes, e-assessments, e-administration of programmes, use of smart cards in accessing university facilities i.e. Lecture rooms and the Library, and other platforms through which defaulters are quickly identified and checkmated) should be put in place to encourage prompt payment of tuition fees
2 / Tuition fees paid by postgraduate students / Very poor, due to low PG student population / To attract more students,PG Programmes should be overhauled in terms of the contents reflecting modern trends in higher education, putting in place measures for timely completion of the programmes
3 / Hostel Accommodation Charges / Poor, in view of low availability of hostel accommodation facilities / More Hostels should be built to accommodate students and measures should be put in place to ensure such are compulsorily occupied by students. Partnership with corporate bodies and individuals should be explored. Existing ones revamped, e.g. Omolayo Hostels.
4 / Transportation / Nil / The University should look into taking up the intra-campus transportation by tricycles or light vehicles, or collecting levies from operators
5 / Charges for Issuance of Transcripts, certificates, etc / Fair / The Exams and Records Unit should be made ICT compliant to enhance better and faster performance.
6 / EKSU Guest House, Catering Services, Entertainment Provision / Poor / The entire system should be revamped and be made functional. The Guest House upgraded to at least 4-star hotel. The University of Ibadan Guest House can be understudied for better service delivery.
7 / Printing Press / Poor / The printing press should be repositioned/updated such that it is able to meet all the printing needs of the University in terms of exam booklet printing, student and staff identity cards, etc. (If ID cards are printed internally, new staff or renewals are more easily served.). It should also be able to provide commercial services to outsiders. ABUAD printing Press can be understudied. This would stop capital flight and also boost the IGR base of the University.
8 / Health Centre / Nil / The Health Centre should be repositioned such that it is able to also provide health care services, laboratory testing services to people around the University especially from Iworoko, Are-Ekiti and Ifaki, the host communities to the University
9 / Commercial Agriculture / Low / The available land mass should be cultivated for commercial purposes. Crops of different kinds, animal husbandry, timber plantation, etc.
10 / Fuel Dump (Filling Station) and Auto Service Bay / Nil / A new filling station should be constructed outside the main gate, and made open to the public. This does not preclude reservation of fuel there for officials and staff of the University during periods of scarcity. The Filling station should be operated alongside an auto service bay. The Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti filling station could be understudied for enhancements.
The existing fuel dump should be rehabilitated and used for storage of diesel for the generating sets.
11 / Bindery Section of the Library / Nil / Students’ should be mandated to patronize this section of the library and prices should be competitive to attract good patronage even from outside the University community. To accommodate the load at peak periods, state of the art equipment should be installed, and the University Printing Press taken on as collaborators.
12 / EKSU Cyber Cafe and Internet Services / Low / Should be repositioned such that it is able to provide very fast services at reasonably low prices
13 / EKSU Block-Making Industry / Low / Contractors should be mandated to patronize the unit. Advertisements can also be placed on the radio and TV channels to sensitize the public.

B.Suggested Action Plans to Propel EKSU IGR Initiatives (outside of the Faculty of Engineering)

SN / IGR Initiatives / Action Plans
1 / EKSU Sachet and Bottled Water
2 / EKSU Fruit Juice
3 / EKSU Bakery
4 / EKSU Corn Flakes
5 / EKSU Feed Mill
6 / Agricultural Health Products / Products such as: Bottled Honey, Herb teas, Aloe vera cream, toilet soap, etc, Moringa seeds, leaves, ground barks from moringa, and other herbs
7 / Entrepreneurship Study Centre Products / Liquid detergents, body cream, etc., basic tools such as bottle openers, tin and can openers, key holders, etc., basic household and kitchen utensils, etc.
8 / Paper and other waste Recycling Centre / For the purpose of turning waste papers generated on campus to wealth, expended water sachets, plastic bottles, glass, etc. Even if the recycling is not done in EKSU, elaborate arrangements can be put in place for collecting these materials, to be sold to recyclers.

C.Suggested Action Plans to Propel the Faculty of Engineering’sIGR Initiatives

SN / IGR Initiatives / Action Plans
1. / Establishment of Engineering Innovation Centre / Design and construction of uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS), Inverters, Battery chargers, Security systems, etc.
E-learning and other software development; website design and management, etc.
Wood Products and Furniture manufacturing (for offices, classrooms, etc.) This is a major avenue for IGR generation.
Welding Works Services (production of gates, fences, anti-burglary grills, tools and implements, etc.)
Unit for scaling up of viable research products for commercial purposes.
2 / Establishment of Engineering Training Centre / Certificate Programmes for artisans on electrical wiring, mechanical/autotronic/mechatronic, renewable energy, building construction, carpentry and joinery, building services, Road Safety and Driving Expertise Management, etc. The University of Ibadan could be understudied for this aspect. (Target- Masons, Auto Mechanics, Electricians etc). Admission to the certificate courses may be based on GCE O/L credit passes in 5 subjects including English (and Maths for the technical courses)
Certifications Centre, i.e. CISCO Certification, Microsoft Certifications, AutoCAD, Orion, MATLAB etc (target audience- Staff, Students and Professionals)
3 / Faculty of Engineering Consultancy Unit / To provide engineering related services, e.g. structural, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical, highway, etc. The Consultancy Unit has been, and can be further much more elaborately involved in the design, supervision and execution of construction projects on the campus. Lack of adequate supervision has led in the past to the usage of low quality material or inappropriate mix or specification (e.g. in the electrical wiring, plumbinginstallations, doors, windows, walls, floor and roof finishing, etc.). The personnel are available.
Engineering Materials (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical)Testing for Commercial Purposes (target- Contractors and consultants)
Geotechnical testing (target- Contractors and consultants)
Water Quality Testing (target- Ekiti State residents)
4 / Development of Small Hydro Power Station on River Elemi / Should help in providing constant power supply to the University community and the host communities. Revenue can be generated from the power supplied to the host communities. The Faculty of Engineering has a team which has been active in a collaborative engagement between the University and the UNIDO over this project.
