More than 300 days of sun - the Spanish Mediterranean. View along the Costa Blanca.

Eco-friendly last resting places under the Mediterranean sun.

Either a burial at sea in front of Majorca or an urn interment under an always-green orange tree, the green funeral company “ad mediterraeneum” offers individual, last resting places under the warm Mediterranean sun.

Spain is UK’s most favourite holiday destination; more than 17 million Brits visited the Mediterranean country in 2016. In addition, some 250’000 British citizens live permanently along the different coastlines and on the several island as Majorca or Ibiza. The main reasons are, no doubt, the agreeable wheatear, the more than three hundred day of sun and mild winter temperatures as well as the relaxed way of live.

Although green funerals are a niche, more and more persons are asking for funeral alternatives, for more individual last resting places, far away from dull graveyards. So, why not something “exotic”? Why not under the Mediterranean sun?

With this propose, Swiss-Spanish citizen Daniel Izquierdo founded some years ago “ad mediterraneum”, offering natural funerals all over the Iberian country. Through his homepage in English, he focusses the people living in the UK. “As the British people do love Spain” comments Daniel, “I am convinced that more than one could get used to the idea of a last resting place under the Mediterranean sun. Eco-friendly, of course.”

To satisfy the different ideas and wishes, Daniel Izquierdo and his team offer several possibilities of green funerals. “A few month ago we were asked to accompany a widow and her daughter into the Pyrenees”, explains Daniel, “So we arranged everything, drove with them into these mountains and found a real lovely place where we scattered the ashes.”

Some years ago, Daniel Izquierdo bought a small orange tree plantation half way between Valencia and Benidorm and transformed it into the “Memory Grove Valencia – Costa Blanca”. Surrounded by gentle pine tree hills, this real unique spot offers the possibility of burials beneath orange trees. “This very special burial woodland is a perfect symbol for everlasting warmth and an eternal life on the sunny side” Daniel comments. And, indeed, when the wheatear in the UK uses to be nasty, the oranges at this memory grove are shimmering in the warm winter sun.

“But the most required service ad mediterraneum offers are the burials at the Mediterranean Sea”, explains Daniel “as the Mediterranean has a magic attraction for most people living in the centre or north of Europe.” Although ad mediterraneumis based in Valencia, Spain’s third biggest city, funerals at sea are organized all over the Mediterranean – at the Costa Brava, the Costa Blanca, in front of Majorca or of the island of Ibiza. “As we try to accomplish the individual wishes of our clients, we charter the boats at the corresponding harbour” clarifies the founder of ad mediterraneum, “and we take care of all details as flowers, beverages or memory stones.”

In case that the relatives cannot be present during the natural funeral in Spain, ad mediterraneum celebrates the ceremony as instructed by the beloved ones. As verification, photos will be taken and a certificate is issued, confirming the date, precise place (GPS coordinates) of the last resting place.
