EET Workshops Implementation

Use this template to share the results of how you have incorporated the techniques of an EET chapter into your teaching. Let us know how you used the EET in the classroom by describing the projects and activities that you carried out with your students. In addition to this template, post a PowerPoint presentation or a text file with screen shots to document your results.

Name: Christopher R. Nitzsche

Position and school: Science Teacher, Cleveland Heights High School

Title of the EET Chapter on which you based your Project or Activity:

Life in Extreme Environments

Dataset Used: ABE data

Tool Used: GeoMapp App

Project/Activity Question(s):

·  What is the seafloor look like, and how do we know?

Project/Activity Goal(s):

·  Learn about the topography of the seafloor and the technologies used to study it.

·  Learn how to study remote areas that are difficult to see and access.

·  Understand how technology is used to advance our understanding of the natural world.

Brief Description of the Project/Activity (What did students do?):

Students used their netbooks to research seafloor geology and followed along with the GeoMapp app that I had up on the projector to answer questions. Students used a worksheet that was provided to answer the questions and record what they had learned.

Number of Students (With how many students did you carry out the project/activity?):

21

Time Spent on the Project/Activity (How many hours or class periods did the project/activity take?): 1 hr

Your Reflections on the Project/Activity:

·  How do you feel the project/activity went with students?

I think it went well. The students were engaged and really enjoyed this activity.

·  What sorts of questions did student ask? What insights did they have? How proficient are students in using the dataset and/or tool of the EET chapter?

Can we go there? How big is that compared to the buildings in Cleveland? What would happen if a spreading ridge started here?

·  How will you carry out this project/activity differently in the future?

Students will have GeoMapp App on their netbooks and will be able to open the data and manipulate it themselves. I will be teaching a section of biology next year and I plan to use this in a unit. My students will have GeoMapp on their netbooks next year

All of my students have netbooks however they cannot install software on them, so I gave a copy of the software to be installed on all of the student’s computers next year. This will allow for the students to have a more interactive hands on experience, and I will also be able to extend the assignment into work that can be done outside of class.
