Discussion

Chapter Plans are due of all chapters October 12th.
Let’s discuss what goes into the plan, and answer any questions you may have; or issues your student have run into about building a Plan.

How do you get students to set actionable items in the plan? Membership for instance.
The judges will give more weight to chapters that quantify their goals and report to them.
Mearl’s chapter will set 90% of the Plan over the summer, and then put the finishing touches on it in the fall semester.
Tom Byrnes’ chapter sets goals with the previous officers in April, and it helps their kickoff in the fall go better.
How important are supporting pictures and materials, as compared to content?
It depends on each judge, but content is king.
It’s nice to put charts and graphs in the Annual Report for a visual reference, and so judges can easily see progress.
Top scoring Chapter Plans and Annual Reports are posted online at the Chapter Reporting page.

Request a chapter roster by emailing
We hope to have rosters pulled from the website by the end of the school year.

Community & Social Impact
We would really love to have students creating an impact through their marketing efforts in the community. More points are allocated for students using their marketing skills in this area.

There is a Best Community & Social Impact Video competition which can be used to fill out actionable items for this section of the chapter plan and annual report.
There’s also a Scholarship developed for this and a Diversity Leadership scholarship. The AMA give $25,000 in scholarships to students (in addition to the $10,000 in EBSCO scholarships).

Questions

Lyz Marshall is inheriting a chapter, what does she need to do?
Check the Chapter Reporting requirements to make sure the Chapter Plan and Annual Report are being done, and that a minimum of ten students are joining and participating.
Having a regular meeting schedule and more frequent meeting schedule for officers.

Give guidance to your executive board as to having realistic participation in activities and competitions.

Tom Byrnes from NC State University asks:
Do you know of any universities that have implemented digital marketing courses on the undergraduate level? Specifically, Social media content, digital analytics, etc.
Piedmont College has a course. They used StuKent’ssimulation software and participated in a Google competition.

Tracy from ECU has written a textbook.

NC State has a 3-credit course, and they’re getting a lot of interest from prospective employers.
Building content for social media- 1 credit course in the works.
Students were also able to participate in a practicum to assist a company with Google Adwords.

Joel Evans taught Internet marketing and found StuKent text and simulation to be helpful. But there was no time in a 2 credit course to add the Google Analytics information.

Eric Harvey Ball State, in their third year of their course, they are testing the Barker & Barker text. Required the course to be more hands on to incorporateHootSuite, Hubspot, Marketo, Google Analytics Certification, Searchingfor resources to build out a social media center and agency.

IU Kelley School of Business has a digital marketing co-major, as well as the following courses:

CRM and Digital Analytics

Digital Marketing (heavy emphasis, strategic and tactical use of social media)

Kyle to update our conference co-chairs to add this topic to the Friday Faculty Track at the International Collegiate Conference (March 16-18, 2017).
