Procedure Assignment

A procedure is one of the most important pieces any scientist has in their toolbox. Without it, other scientists wouldn’t be able to complete the same experiment under the same conditions and therefore, the hypothesis to be tested wouldn’t have a chance at becoming a theory or a law. So it is important to be precise with your words and clear with their meaning.

What is a procedure? A procedure is the written set of steps to completing the experiment that will test your hypothesis to your science fair question.

Why do we need this? You need to understand that scientists use procedures to complete other scientist’s experiments to compile more data in order to support or disprove other scientist’s findings. We need procedures to follow steps as closely as possible in order to have similar findings.

What is my goal? Your goal is to write out your own personal procedure for completing your science fair experiment. Then you will have your parent, friend, sibling, etc. follow the steps to see if they can run the experiment the way you have written it out.

How will I know I have completed the assignment? You will know you have completed the assignment when the partner can complete the experiment the way you have envisioned it simply by following your procedure.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Using the back of this page, please develop your procedure using the following format:

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

When you are finished, have a partner try to complete your experiment the way you have written it. You may need to go back and "tweek” your writing a little to make sure your directions are complete. When your partner has completed the experiment the way you envisioned it, have them sign the sheet below and turn this in as your assignment.
