I. Call to order
- the meeting was called to order at 9:00 AM by ESA Chair Darius Wilson
II. Approval of minutes-CLEC 2017 in Boston, MA
- a motion was made and seconded to accept the meeting minutes from the ESA meeting held at
CLEC in Boston, MA on February 25, 2017
III. Appointment of Recording Secretary
- Carol Golyski will record the meeting minutes
IV. Elections
- Committee on Educational Programs and Initiatives (Call for nominations posted on
ASCLS –Education members site)
- 2 positions for CEPI:
Joan Polancic
Daniel Degreinier
- motion made and seconded to approve nominees
V. Reports
A. ESA Chair Report – Darius Wilson
B. Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory (DCLS) Science Oversight Committee– Renee Hodgkins
- in July 2016 ASCLS Board of Directors (BOD) approved the request for the DCLS Oversight
Committee to be apermanent committee starting in 2017-2018
- transition to report directly to BOD, no longer a subcommittee of ESA
- DCLS tool kit on web site to help programs establish DCLS programs
- subcommittee formed for preparing the Body of Knowledge for DCLS
- documentation review committee from the Board of Certification
- committee concerns:
- opportunities for financial assistance to students
- characterizing clinical residency
C. Student Awards Committee – Floyd Josephat
- 12 abstracts received for posters; 8 were selected
- 3 submitted case studies; 1 research proposal submitted
D. Committee for Educational and Professional Initiatives (CEPI) Update –KathyforJoan Polancic
- committee to monitor and assess trends in levels of practice
- final version of the entry level curriculum is available through the web site
- sent a representative to Legislative Day in March-Cindy Handley
- CEPI presented at CLEC 2017-Success stories to retain and recruit clinical sites
- proposal for 2018-“Tips for Successful Grant Applications for Research in Education”
- simulated lab survey results are being collated
- the Education and Research (E&R) Fund grants will expand to include education topics
- theMedical Educator Professional Development Institute (MLEd-PDI) was approved by
the ASCLSBOD; this group will look into developing medical laboratory educator
professionaldevelopment to provide support to new educators
E. ASCLS Education Department – Karrie Hovis
- any questions or concerns regarding students contact: Andrea Hickey, Director of Membership
and P.A.C.E.
- newrecruitment video and flyer has been produced
F. Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference

2. 2018 CLEC-Houston, TX, February 22-24- Karen Chandler
- theme is “Education Roundup”
- well rounded program is being planned
- Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria is conference hotel
- $189.00 per night room rate for a singleor double
- hotel reservation deadline Jan. 31, 2019
3. 2019 CLECin Baltimore, MD. February 21-23
- Candice Grayson will chair
VI. New Business
A. Financial support for participation in the 2018 USA Science Festival in Washington, DC,
April 6-8
- Mary Ann McLean requested $1,000.00from ESA or science festival
-motion made and seconded; motion carried
VII. Ongoing Business
A. ASCLS Today articles - Cheryl Caskey, editor
- going to 8 times/year publishing; need ideas for articles and ways to recruit authors
- would like ESA to submit two articles for ASCLS Today
- maximum 900 words. submit graphics as jpg folder
B. Graduate Program Directory
- 2 new volunteers - Anastasia Augustine (MLT directory – updated edition already posted to
website 7.2017) and AbouDrammeh (MLS Directory)
C. ESA Member Community
- web site updated, more user friendly, easier to post, easy to archive documents
VIII. Announcements
A. CLEC
- suggestion was made to include as much food as possible in registration costs as food costs
are rising; some schools will not reimburse for meals
- Friday evening diningoptionfor CLEC 2108: barbeque at rodeo or dinner at hotel
