Edna Emma Bauman

Edna Emma (Stubbe) Bauman died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Clarkson Mt. View Nursing Home. She was born to Emmo and Hattie (Schafer) Stubbe on May 19, 1927 in Kingsbury County, SD. She attended rural school in KingsburyCounty, including SpiritLakeSchool, through the 8th grade. Because her family lived a distance from the high school, she boarded in DeSmet through high school graduation. She earned her RN degree from St. John’sSchool of Nursing in Huron, SD. She became a Cadet Nurse in the U.S. Public Health Service/ U.S. Army while attending school. WWII ended before she could see active service.

She met Donald Sheridan Bauman of Huron, SD, when he was a patient under her care; they were married August 17, 1948 in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived in several communities in South Dakota and Wyoming, and eventually returned to live in Sturgis, SD, in 1965. She loved her career as a nurse and found particular reward while working at Ft. Meade VA Hospital for nearly 25 years. The Viet NamVeteransOutreachCenter gave her an Award of Merit for her care of and service to Viet Nam Era Veterans.

She was a member of the UnitedMethodistChurch in Sturgis, the Order of Eastern Star in Laramie, WY, and was nominated for Mother of the Year in South Dakota in 1980. Edna enjoyed many years of bowling in Sturgis, traveling with her husband, Don, and any activities involving the family.

She is survived by her husband, Don Bauman, Rapid City; her sons, Ken (Mary), Rapid City, and Steve, Antioch, CA; six grandchildren, David Bauman, Chicago, IL; Matt Bauman, Spearfish, SD; Katie Bauman, Chicago IL; Jennilee (David) Parkinson, Antioch, CA; Brittany (Phillip) Buster, Tucson, AZ; and Kalli (Gabriel) Beltran, Antioch, CA; and three great-grandsons, Kaiden and Eli Parkinson and Orlando Beltran, all of Antioch, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, six sisters, and her son, Larry Dean Bauman.

A visitation will be held Sunday, August 1st from noon to 9 PM with the family present from 2 to 4 PM at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Visitation will resume Monday one hour preceding the service at the church.

Services will be held Monday August 2nd at 2 PM at the UnitedMethodistChurch in Sturgis with Pastor Gordon Higgins and Chaplain H. B. Cleveland officiating. Burial will follow at BearButteCemetery in Sturgis.

Memorials may be directed to the Black Hills Playhouse, or a nursing scholarship program at the college of your choice.
