Edexcel GCSE 2009 Design and Technology

Graphic Products (2GR01) — Year 11

Practical support to help you deliver this Edexcel specification

Scheme of work

This scheme of work has been produced to help you implement this Edexcel specification. It is offered as an example of one possible model that you should feel free to adapt to meet your needs and is not intended to be in any way prescriptive. It is in editable word format to make adaptation as easy as possible.

Other course planning support

You will find other support for planning the course in the Teacher’s Guide. This is a free downloadable resource that you can access at

Teaching resource exemplars

The scheme of work contains suggestions for resources that you can use to support your teaching. These are suggestions only of material you may find useful and you are encouraged to use a wide range of resources that suit the needs of your students.

Edexcel additional support

  • Ask the Expert —puts you in direct email contact with over 200 of our senior subject experts
  • Edexcel’s community — these message boards are designed to enable you to access peer-to-peer support from fellow Edexcel teaching and delivery staff in schools and colleges.

Edexcel scheme of work

Graphic Products (2GR01) — Year 11

This scheme of work is only relevant if you have the appropriate equipment and background knowledge to deliver it. This is only an example and should not be replicated as it stands. It must be adapted to suit individual students (and their ability), individual schools and the teacher’s individual experience.

key questions / Learning outcomes / Exemplar activities / Exemplar resources
1-4 / Designing and Review /
  • To establish different approaches to designing initial ideas.
  • To understand that ideas should be workable, detailed and supported by the research.
  • To complete a range of design ideas with annotation and review against the specification.
  • To consider sustainability whilst designing.
/
  • Teacher looks at exemplar material with students and discusses different techniques for different products.
  • Teacher divides class into groups that are designing similar products and reviews previous projects’ designing approach.
  • Teacher establishes what methods are possible for offering annotation and review.
  • Students review the initial aspects of the design problem.
/
  • Edexcel have produced resources that assist with interpretation of examination questions and how to approach them. These are usually available on CD through INSET, or previous projects could be used.
  • See Edexcel Design and Technology Graphic Products Teacher’s Guide at:

5-8 / Development /
  • To establish different approaches to developing initial ideas.
  • To appreciate the key role that CAD or physical modelling can play in developing final designs and establishing working answers.
  • To understand key terminology such as ‘sub-systems’ and how they feed into the developmental changes in the design proposal.
/
  • Teacher looks at exemplar material with students and discusses different techniques for different products.
  • Teacher divides class into groups that are designing similar products and reviews previous projects’ designing approach.
  • Students develop changes towards a final solution from the initial ideas.
  • Students should look at sub-systems in detail and use different CAD facilities to lead towards the final design.
/
  • Edexcel have produced resources that assist with interpretation of examination questions and how to approach them. These are usually available on CD through INSET, or previous projects could be used.

9-11 / Final Design /
  • To understand that a final proposal must include consideration of detail such as: components, processes and techniques for manufacture.
/
  • Students present a final design proposal in an appropriate medium for the product being designed.
  • Students should include detail that supports its manufacture and any components that will be needed.
  • A working drawing may well be required from students at this stage and it will be need to be produced with measurements and to an appropriate scale.
  • Students produce a cutting list.
/
  • Edexcel have produced resources that assist with interpretation of examination questions and how to approach them. These are usually available on CD through INSET, or previous projects could be used.
  • See Edexcel Design and Technology Graphic Products Teacher’s Guide at: and page 128 of the Graphic products Edexcel textbook.

12
13-14 / Production Plan /
  • To recognise the importance for forward planning.
  • To understand the need to consider all possible production techniques required for the product manufacture in the school workshop.
/
  • Students draft flow chart plans or make tabulated plans in rough for consideration.
  • Teacher should encourage the inclusion of a changes or amendments section.
  • Students complete a time-related production plan that includes risk assessments and quality control.
/
  • Edexcel have produced resources that assist with interpretation of examination questions and how to approach them. These are usually available on CD through INSET, or previous projects could be used.

15-22 / Coursework practical /
  • To understand the need to select appropriate tools for the manufacturing process.
  • To understand the need to ensure that safe working practices are demonstrated.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the properties of materials in the manufacturing process.
  • To evidence a wide range of skills with precision and accuracy.
  • To produce a fully functional outcome.
/
  • Teacher ensures time is given over to the management of the coursework practical elements.
  • Teacher ensures time is set aside for the photographing and documentation of the practical.
/
  • Edexcel have produced resources that assist with interpretation of examination questions and how to approach them. These are usually available on CD through INSET, or previous projects could be used.

23-24 / Testing and evaluation /
  • To understand the connection between the comparison of product outcome and the intended specification.
  • To devise a series of tests that would ascertain the level of success in meeting the specification.
  • To understand that the results of the tests conducted should form the basis of the product evaluation.
/
  • Teacher and students look at exemplar material and discuss different approaches to testing and evaluation.
  • Students produce a list of tests that connect to the original specification statements and any others if some have arisen since.
  • Students photograph testing and comment upon the results to inform an evaluation of the final product, including user views and sustainability.
