If You Can’t Stand the Heat…

June 1, 2005,

Don Feldkamp, Maplewood Lanes’ kitchen manager, stepped out of the kitchen and into the winners circle as he defeated Rich Smith 183-159 with handicap. The championship match concluded a difficult campaign for Don as he faced some of the hottest bowlers in the field. Don qualified with a score of 745 with handicap, a comfortable 52 pins over the cut score of 693. His head to head matches were not quite so comfortable. Don defeated Richard Marshall 213-194, former Champion Eric Jensen 274-260, and six strikes in a row closed out his match against Tom Shereda 263-230. Don, a relative rookie to matchplay bowling held his composure after a rocky start in the finals as he pushed Rich Smith to the tenth frame.

Rich Smith rolled a scratch qualifying score of 731 then increased the pace in matchplay. He defeated Karen Cusumano 247-225, Ray Kaiser 255-230, and Chris Strong 243-207. The Achilles Heel for Rich turned out to be lane 12 in the championship round. After leaving a wash out and big four split in his first two attempts on 12 he found his range but not his carry. A solid 10 and a swishing 7 pin framed two strikes thrown on lane 11 which foiled his best chances at a double. Despite the frustrating ordeal on lane 12 Rich stepped up in the 10th frame with a chance to double for the victory. Another stubborn 10 pin stood tall and squelched Rich’s campaign.

Forty six bowlers competed for more than $1000.00 in prize money. The low to cash score was 693. Three women reached matchplay again, the lowest entering average among our cashers was 158. With the wide variety of matchplay finalist every tournament it simply begs the question: Why don’t more people participate? Tell your friends, if you and a friend want to bowl together simply register two days in advance and I will schedule you on the same pair. Bring a buddy and double the fun!
