Rationale:
To ensure that Eastwood Primary School meets the specific first aid needs of student at school or on approved school activities.
Aim:
Eastwood provides:
- first aid facilities
- sufficient staff trained in first aid under the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004 and the Department’s First Aid and Infection Control advice. See Department resources:
There will always a first aid officer who:
- can assist an injured or ill person
- has current qualifications, covering all the school’s first aid requirements.
Principal ensures relevant staff receive additional training to meet student health needs.
Definition
First aid involves emergency treatment and support to:
- preserve life through:
- - clearing and maintaining open airways
- - restoring breathing or circulation
- - monitoring wellbeing until the person recovers or is transferred into the
- care of ambulance paramedic, doctor or nurse
- protect a person, particularly if they are unconscious
- prevent a condition worsening
- promote recovery.
Note: The goal of first aid is not to diagnose or treat the condition.
Implementation:
HLTAID003 First Aid training is provided to all Education Support Officers, every three years
- First Aid equipment and resources maintained and managed by First Aid trained staff
- A duty roster for each term will include trained staff in attendance for administering first aid to students at recess and lunch
- Medical records will be updated annually, kept electronically and in hard copy in the first aid room
- Current details of students with severe medical conditions will be on display in the staffroom and first aid room.
- All staff are reminded of their duty of care expectations at the beginning of each year
