School updates for this week (9/8/14)

-Upcoming Events & Reminders:

-Immunizations- We have many Kindergarten students who are not up to date on their immunizations. Notification letters are being sent to parents this week. All students must have up to date immunization records submitted to the office by Monday, September 22nd. Any students not up to date with immunizations as of Tuesday, September 23rd, will not be allowed to return to school (school suspension due to lack of immunization documentation) until current immunization updates are provided to our school nurse. Upcoming Immunization Clinics (Big Shots Saturdays/Family Health Link) information is attached to this update at the end of this document.

-Curriculum Night-September 22nd 5-7pm (beginning at 5pm with PTA General Meeting)

-Each grade level teacher will present materials to their parents

-All Kindergarten parents will meet in Ms. Hooper’s room on 9/22

-Specials Teacher Locations:

-Art (Clifford) and PE (Sprankle) teachers will be in the Art room presenting

their curriculum

-Media (O’Neal) in Media Center

-Technology (Tyree) in Computer Lab/Tyree’s Room

-Music (Scotland) in Auditorium

-Reading 3D (K-3 Literacy/Aligned to NC Read to Achieve (RtA) Guidelines)- assessments begin on Tuesday of this week and continue over the next 3 weeks of school. Link to learn more about Reading 3D:

-Checking out students---please try to check out students by 2:45pm each day. This helps ensure that our dismissal processes flow smoothly and ALL students are accounted for and arrive home safely!!

-Updates to Student Uniform/Dress Code (Effective Friday, September 5th):

After meeting with the PTA Board this morning, the following changes will take place beginning tomorrow for Eastover uniform and/or shoe policies:

Shoes:

-Shoes should be mostly (predominantly) white, blue, gray, or black athletic shoes.Laces need to be the same colors (white, blue, gray, or black).Shoes may have trim in bright colors (neon, silver, glitter) as long as it is not the main color of the shoes.

-Shoes may not have any lights.

-Girls may wear brown, black, or blue Mary Janes/Ballet Flats/Toms.

-Boots are not permitted.

-On PE days, all students must wear athletic shoes.

Socks/Tights:

-All students must wear socks or tights.Socks or tights worn must be (predominantly/mostly) white, blue, gray, or black.

Hair Accessories:

-Blue or white hair accessories are preferred.Any other colored hair accessories must be kept to a minimum and will be permitted as long as it does not disrupt the instructional process in the classroom.

-Reading 3D begins on Tuesday of this week.

-Field trip to see the play 101 Dalmatians on September 18th. Permission slips will go home in Tuesday folders (9/9).

1st Grade—

-We are collecting pillowcases—please bring in a pillowcase from home for a special Science project by Friday, September 12th.

-Scholastic Book App---this is recommend by teachers to download on your apple/droid devices in an effort to select books (at students reading level) to read at home with your child. Please check your child’s agenda for his/her current reading level. Link to app:

-When thinking of the best day to eat lunch with your child---Wednesday is the best day for 1st graders

-Ms. Castle’s husband (Donald Gordon “Mack” Castle) passed away a few weeks ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Castle during this time. An interim teacher (1st grade) has been hired, but is still in the HR approval process. Once HR has confirmed approval, then the teacher’s name can be released. A temporary sub has been placed in Ms. Castle’s class during this transition time. Ms. Castle has announced that she will be returning early from her leave of absence. Ms. Castle’s first day back to Eastover will be Monday, October 6th.

-In lieu of flowers, Ms. Castle’s family wishes that donations be made to the Walk to Defeat ALS; Team Mack’s Walkers. Donations may be made online at

2nd Grade—

-Reminders about lunchtime visits:

-please remember to only have lunch with your student/child

-once lunch is over, we appreciate you being able to help us in transitioning your child back to the lunch room quickly in order for class to start back up quickly.

3rd grade—

-Beginning of grade (BOG) testing begins Tuesday (9/9). Please be on time and eat a healthy breakfast.

-A visit from the fire department for a 45-minute fire safety lesson on Wednesday morning!

4th grade—

-Math—jumping right into division this week, introduction of math vocabulary

-Math MAP testing continues this week, should finish by Wednesday

-Balanced Literacy—continue working on routines/procedures of Balanced Literacy, working on interactive writer’s notebooks in class

-Science---great videos, work on flipped classroom (focus on scientific method and inquiry)—if students forget to watch videos at home, they can watch in-class first thing in the morning with their teacher

-Soc. Studies—beginning cultural study/research (related to Explorers and Native Americans)

Specials—

-Parents, Web Tools permission forms will be coming home this week for parental permission/signatures. Please return these forms back to your child’s grade-level teacher by this Friday, September 12th.

-Fitness testing for grades 2-5 begins this week in PE.
