Earthquakes by Year – A 2D Animation in ArcGIS ArcMap 9.2

1. Open ArcMap, Open a new Empty Map. Under File > Document Properties > Data Source Options be sure “store relative paths” radio button is checked. Type in a Title, Subject and your name as Author and Click OK. Save this project using the same title you selected in the Quakes_Plates folder.

2. Click the Add Data Button (if necessary use ConnetToFolder Button and navigate to ArcProjects/AAG/Quakes_Plates) and from Sphfile folder and Add: Earthquakes, Continents, World.sid and Plates07.

3. Resymbolize Plates07 by clicking on symbol in the Table of Contents and changing Fill to No Color and increasing the outline to 4 and color to Solar Yellow. Reposition datasets so that Plates07 dataset is above World.sid.

4. Right click on Earthquakes and select Properties. Click on Symbology Tab and under Show and select Quantities > Graduated Colors. For Fields Value select Year. A warning may come up that “Maximum sample size reached. . . .” Click OK. Click the Classify… button and Click Sampling . . . button and change Maximum Sample Size to 58000 then OK.

5.  Change number of Classes to 5 – you should now see Break Values as 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Click OK. Select a color ramp such as “Distance” (or click on each Symbol and pick a different color) and Click OK.

6.  Add toolbar for Animation to ArcMap by using View menu, toolbars, check Animation. On Animation down arrow menu select Animation Manager.

7.  In Animation Manager click on the Keyframe tab and change the Keyframes of Type to Time Layer. Click on Create button. Then in Animation Keyframe dialogue box Click on New. Highlight Keyframe name and change to Start Time. Click on Create, then CLICK on Create again, highlight and change the name to End Time. Click Close. Note that Animation Manager adds two Time Layer keyframes named Start Time and End Time.

8.  For Time Layer Start Time type in 1/1/2001 under the Time column. For Time Layer End Time type in 12/31/2005 in Time column so that it looks like this

9.  Change to the Tracks Tab in the Animation Manager and click on the “0” for Time Layer Track 1 and then Click Properties. Select the Time Track Properties tab and for Start Time Field Select YEARMODA and format: YYYYMMDD and Check Animate fields cumulatively. Click OK then click Close.

10.  Click on the Animation control in the Animation Tool Bar and click on the start arrow. Click on Options and change duration to 25 sec. Click on the Play Arrow to play animation. Animation should play and accumulate data for the years 2001 to 2005. Note: because of the size of the dataset, there is a lag time between seeing the date and then the data drawing.

11.  Save your animation file by clicking on the animation drop down and Save Animation File to your Quakes and Plates folder.

12.  You can now Clear Animation and then reload this animation when you want to use it. For more information see the Online Help and the Animation Tutorial.
