Citizenship Scavenger Hunt Points

EarnUp to 5 Points (Only four of these are allowed each semester)

__ Write a letter to the editor of the Press and Sun Bulletin

__ Have the letter published in the Press and Sun Bulletin

__ Write a letter to a Congressman

__ Get a response from your letter to a Congressman

__ Write a letter to a soldier serving overseas

__ Get a response from a soldier serving overseas

__ Register to vote (or prove you already are registered)

__ Memorize the Presidents in order and recite them to the class

__ Cut out or copy a current event article on any public policy issue and write a summary explaining its impact (you may not print out an article from the Internet)

Earn Up to 10 Points

__ Perform a school poll on Presidential Candidates (School or National) determining what 5 issues students care most about, the 5 most important qualities of a president, etc… and then present your information in chart form to the class

__ Volunteer to tutor in any subject with a high school teacher

__ Make a power point presentation demonstrating the results of the various state primaries mentioning which issues are more relevant in which states and why

__ Draw and analyze your own political cartoon on a recent current event article or on a recent school event

__ Analyze a protest song and explain its meaning to the class

__ Tape a portion of a news broadcast and show it to the class. Analyze the broadcast as having either a conservative or liberal slant

__ Create a propaganda poster supporting any issue you feel strongly towards (School or National)

__ Read any of the articles on Reserve in the library and answer the questions accompanying them

Earn Up to 15 Points

__ Give a three minute speech promoting a Presidential or Congressional candidate (Be ready to answer questions from the class…or at least from me)

__ Write and perform a protest song to the class

__ Research mudslinging slogans of past Presidential candidates and do a power point presentation for the class

__ Attend any non-profit organization meeting and explain its impact on public policy*

__ Volunteer to help at the annual School Budget vote

__ Interview any local politician and determine why and how they got involved in politics*

__ Get on the news for something promoting participation in government (not sports or crime)

__ Interview any war veteran and determine their overall feelings towards the government process*

__ Interview a recently made U.S. citizen and discuss the procedure by which one becomes a citizen. The questions and answers need to be turned in (either in written or recorded form) and if the citizen will come in to be questioned by the class, 10 bonus points will be added*

__ Make a poster promoting something positive within the school

Earn Up to 20 Points

__ Collaborate with an Elementary School Classroom in writing a children’s book on Good Citizenship in which they supply the pictures and you supply the words

__ Make a DBQ on Good Citizenship geared towards the Eighth Grade Exam (A bonus of 5 points if any Eighth Grade teacher actually uses it for a test)

__ Research an educational grant and draft a proposal that Chenango Forks qualifies towards

__ Make a TV political commercial slamming one candidate and promoting another with statistics, graphs, and charts

__ Draft a State of the School Speech and present it to the class

__ Do a 5 page research paper on any of the following determining their role in expanding or limiting citizenship: Aaron Burr, John Brown, Helen Keller, Michael Moore, Strum Thurmond, Joe McCarthy, Ted Kennedy, Huey Long, Jesse Ventura, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, Bobby Seal, J. Edgar Hoover, Carrie Nation, David Koresh, Lucille Ball, etc…

__ Volunteer to help at any non for profit organization*

Earn Up to 25 Points

__ Organize a benefit dinner, concert or walk for any charitable group*

__ Attend any court hearing in Broome, Chenango, or Tioga County and write a one page summary discussing the trial*

__ Read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, write a 2 page book review, and have a 5 minute discussion with me regarding the book

__ Read 1984 by George Orwell, write a 2 page book review, and have a 5 minute discussion with me regarding the book

__ Read Prison Writings: My Life is My Sundance by Leonard Peltier, write a 2 page book review, and have a 5 minute discussion with me regarding the book

__ Read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, write a 2 page book review, and have a 5 minute discussion with me regarding the book
