GOALS

  • Update course competencies for all music business and production courses.
  • Asses, update, improve and standardize the music business program curriculum. The new and improved curriculum must continue to be in compliance with the State of Florida educational objectives.

Focus of Assessment

SERVICE TO STUDENTS

  • CME expanded to two ensembles at Kendall and North.
  • Purchased, learned and adopted new teaching techniques using new software such as Apple’s Quicktime, Quicktime Broadcaster, MakeRefMovie X, iTunes Podcasts, iPod Shuffle, Pages, and Keynote, Ambrosia’s Snapz Pro X, Palm Treo 650 software, Rogue Amoeba Software Nicecast, Boingo Wireless and Kodak EasyShare, WebCT Illuminate.
  • Updated and upgraded software including MOTU Digital Performer 4.5 and Mach5, Digidesign Pro Tools 6.7 LE, Make Music Finale 2006, Sibelius 4, Macromedia Studio 8, TechTool Pro 4.0.6, Mac OS X 10.4.2 and others.
  • With input from my departmental colleagues Dr. Richard Rose, Steve Roitstein, department chair William Kreitner and former school director Randall DeWitt, a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) webpage was developed and posted on the Internet for use by new and returning students. This FAQ, designed to improve customer service and departmental efficiency, is especially useful during the advising and registration process allowing students to access important information prepared to help them achieve a more satisfactory advisement, registration and educational experience while allowing the department faculty and administrators to concentrate on growth, curriculum development and providing an improved educational experience.

The newly created music business and production department FAQ webpage contains degree tracks, course descriptions, course competencies, pictures of the Kendall and North campus facilities, offers students two-year suggested schedules designed to help them complete their degrees in an effective and timely manner and even includes Quicktime video streaming movies of professors describing the courses and their respective requirements and learning outcomes. This FAQ webpage, designed to become a template for use by MDC’s advising and registration departments, is part of a Human Performance Improvement course paper presented to the Doctor of Higher Education Leadership in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education at Nova Southeastern University and can be accessed at

  • Implemented new teaching strategies including but not limited to:
  • Encouraging students to design group-generated multimedia enhanced presentations of business plans in MUM 2702.
  • Asking students to create a diverse musical variety of beats serving as an accompaniment for spoken word or rap-based recordings of the multiplication tables in English, Spanish and Creole. Students are currently recording the vocal segments of the project and will present the final product to the college leadership/ It is our sincere hope that the product will benefit Dade-County Public School students and teachers with the challenges associated in teaching mathematics. By creating a creative and fun way to teach math, MDC Sound Recording students are learning the fundamentals of sound recording while simultaneously serving the next generation of college students. We hope to create a product worthy of use by the school system and hope to garner a grant in order to improve the recording facilities at MDC.
  • Music Business 1 (MUM 2700) students now turn in all assignments and take all tests using WebCT. In the case of many students who struggle with the rigors of copyright law and the mathematical computations required when computing mechanical royalties and other royalty oriented earnings, WebCT allows students to be tested more than once in order to improve their scores. Each version of the test changes slightly in order to foster critical thinking and learning. One MUM 2700 student afflicted with a form of autism called Azperger’s Syndrome scored the highest grade in their respective section of the course due to the ability of WebCT enhanced instruction to harness concentration, improve focus and provide immediate feedback. In this professor’s opinion, any student who needs help focusing on the task at hand is well served by the information and education delivery power of WebCT.
