Classical Conditioning Practice:
Directions: For the following examples of classical conditioning please give the conditioning stimulus and unconditioned stimulus, as well as the unconditioned response and conditioned response. If it is not an example of classical conditioning indicate that this is so.
- Earl plays football. During the pre-game warm-up the team listens to the fight song and Earl, thinking about the game, gets nervous. Now, whenever Earl hears a fight song it makes him nervous.
- Kyle has failed math and retaken the class many times, always in the same room. Now, whenever Kyle walks into that classroom he gets an angry feeling in the pit of his stomach.
- Rachel has a dog at home. For years, whenever someone knocked at the door the dog would know right before and would bark. Now, whenever a dog barks Rachel looks over at the door.
- Ever since she can remember Kelsey has been afraid of rats. Recently she has noticed that she is also afraid of snakes.
- Matt lives in a house VERY near train tracks. Whenever the train rumbles by pots fall off the shelves, which he catches by sticking his hands out. The train always blows its horn before it goes by. Now, whenever even a car horn blows it causes Matt to reflexively stick out his hand.
- Ashley finds symphony music exciting. Now, whenever she sees a saxophone she gets a feeling of anticipation and excitement.
- Hudson the cat loves to bang on the blinds in the bedroom at night. His owner, Heidi, hated the habit. Heidi squirted Hudson with water whenever he began to bang on the blinds. Now he no longer bangs on the blinds for fear of the water gun.
- Whenever Jim walks into a bathroom and sees a toilet he feels like he has to go to the bathroom.
- Sparky the cat loves cat treats that are stored in the top cupboard. Now, whenever Sparky’s owner opens the cupboard Sparky begins to salivate.
- Scientists conducted an experimented where they placed female doves into a cage with male doves, and turning on a red light immediately before doing so. Now whenever the scientists turn on the red light the male doves become aroused without the female doves being present.
